Wheel bolt caps....
Hello


See my other thread for towbars... But ended up having to take the spare wheel off to attach a caravan I was moving as the stabilizer handle raises up too high and hits the wheel,


Got 2 caps off the spare ok but one was just stuck on fast... Managed in the end but literally 30 mins of vice grips, pliers, hammer..... what a phaff...


So my question is there a method of getting these off and what size are the wheel bolts so I can check my socket also.

Do you mean the caps on alloy wheel nuts? If so, you're not supposed to take them off Confused They should take a 27mm socket over the caps. Darren

What he ^^^ said with 1 exception.
There is a cap with a concave dimple.
This cap is removable with the plastic tool from the tool kit and covers a locking nut.
The locking nut adaptor uses a 27mm socket the same as the other nuts.
There should be 1 on each wheel from factory. Cheers,

As above you don't remove the caps except the locking nut covers (same applies to road wheels) It's also worth noting the nuts for the spare wheel are different to the ones on the road wheels - they're not interchangeable according to the hand book.

You need a 27mm socket, get a Hex one rather than a 12 sided one, as a hex wond damage the caps.

The caps came straight off the others no problem (although they were the two wheel locks I have) the third wheel nut would not budge, tried the plastic 'tool' in the tool kit... no luck.

The socket would not fit happily over the last wheel nut with the cap, unlike the other two where it was fine. I ended up hammering the socket on in order to undo it. Not happy on the hottest day so far just phaffing trying to remove my spare Sad


I will check 27mm Hex, Many thanks

If the socket won't fit, you may have swollen nuts, a common Defender affliction.

Corrosion on the nut, under the cosmetic cover, causes the cover to swell. In this case, use a larger socket.

Because as has already been said the covers are NOT supposed to be removed from non-locking nuts.

If someone has used a 12 point socket on them at some point they've probably damaged the cap or the nut underneath has rusted and made the cap swell.

Series 3's basically had tractor wheel nuts. So the farmer could use the tractor tools on them.

I have never seen a tractor with wheel-nuts as small as those on a Series Land-Rover, except maybe a Kubota!

I did once get an MOT advisory on a Series 1 that all the wheel-nuts were reversed! Rolling with laughter

I'm pretty sure they're the same size as the rear wheel nuts on my friends 1950's Fordson Major.

Yeah I have been told that my nuts are the wrong way around once or twice.......... Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....
