Have you replaced the coolant reservoir cap? The seal can go on these and leak out when hot. Cheap to buy just to rule it out. Ray

Normal characteristic, nothing to worry about.
Replacing the cap would be a good idea all the same. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___ ___\⭐️Lone|Star|State/___ ____\We|Will|Win/___ ____/🇬🇧🇺🇸\____ _//*⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰*\\_ |

Erm, I beg to differ Steve, losing that much coolant is certainly not a normal characteristic, it indicates there is a problem. No engine routinely loses coolant at that rate !

thanks all, it certainly is p**ng away a ton of coolant and no obvious egress. I suspect its P-gasket but if so, would expect to see trace, my q is whether OAT coolant leaves this trace - suspect, it is only IAT (the old style coolant), because it is full of silicate, which *would* leave a trace - silicate is more or less like kettle scale, so bound to show up when dried on leaking P-gasket.

For some reason I was thinking 2mm not 2cm.
![]() ![]() OAT does leave a trace, depends on colour of your coolant? I'd be taking a look at possibly split hoses and especially your coolant / Waterpump. I had issues with the Waterpump gasket on mine, started of not much and got worse pretty fast and coolant isn't cheap to pour away. Also not good for animals or wildlife if course. I doubt the radiator is the issue _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___ ___\⭐️Lone|Star|State/___ ____\We|Will|Win/___ ____/🇬🇧🇺🇸\____ _//*⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰*\\_ Last edited by custom90 on 31st May 2017 10:47am. Not sure I understand that even loosing 2mm in the expansion tank every 100 miles would be normal. I think only normal is that nothing gets lost, period. It is a closed circuit. I hope it is just the so often blamed cap here. I never lost a drop so far in 9 years. Eric You never actually own a Defender. On three occasions I have suffered from coolant loss at rates approaching those you describe.

I assume as you mention the p gasket your engine is a 300 tdi?
If so another source of leak might be the expansion tank itself. The original black ones had a habit of splitting a side seam and leaking out there. |

OAT still leaves staining, it's usually pink. The problem is the viscous fan disperses any leak so the staining isn't so obvious.
On a side note, you know you don't get charged by the letter for posting on here? e-tank, p-gasket..... ![]() |

I had a leak in a 300tdi - took ages to find, pressure tests running etc etc etc.
Turned out to be a slight leak from the top radiator hose connection - adding a 2nd jubilee clip solved it. It only was noticeable when hot, and by chance i lifted the bonnet after a long drive with the engine on to do something else and found it. Cant tell you how many times it had tests, inspections etc...as it was dripping onto things it wasnt noticeable and didn't leave any tell tails! Mike |
