Interior Mood Lighting
Following the conversion from a 130 DCHCPU to a 130 estate car. I thought that some nice interior lights would be the way forward. Now most modern cars have subtle LEDs or what I have discovered to be called 'mood lighting'. I tracked a company down in Birmingham that makes various types of LEDs.
Following extensive and rigorous trails I have come up with an easy to fit design for a reasonable price.

What it is:- Two x 500mm long x 15mm wide light bars set into a 500mm long 40mm wide holder with a clear cover.
The lights can be set in the manufacturing stage to be switched in various combinations. I have opted for three options 0=off 1=Subtle red 2=full on white (very bright)

Location:- The lights are designed to be hidden from sight behind the plastic trim that is located above the 2nd row doors where the alpine roof window is located (see pic below) the lights shine up onto the roof lining either providing a subtle glow of coloured light or very bright white light.

When the final design is assembled and installed I will post some pictures Thumbs Up

That sounds pretty neat. I was looking for a way to increase the interior lighting - I quite like the idea of 2 stage.

Will you just wire it into the existing roof-mounted interior lighting circuit (I assume being LED they don't have much current draw)? If so, where are you positioning your 2-state switch?

Looking forward to seeing the end results. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

Nice idea, there is a lack of light in/around the middle row, but if you are installing lights there, make sure the area is dry, there is an internal drip rail, so you may want to raise the lights 10-20mm.

(Even IF your defender does not leak, the drip rail may also collect condensation)

If they're purchased with a rating of IP65 (IEE 17th Edition Table Rating for those that may wish to refer) water/condensation won't even enter into consideration! Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Hi Andrew ...
just took a peek at the photos and saw the red mood light ... made me think about a Submarine at action stations for some reason ..... Cool

Love the concept. we have some LED reading lights for the rear seats when camping that work really well, but this may prove to be a better idea when settng up the waggon with out using the built in lights that have more battery drain.
great stuff! Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

All my STD interior lights already run led light to prevent excessive drain. Mike
