It's a recent buy, very pleased, beautiful inside and was a real bargain. Boats can be had so cheaply at the moment.

My mate has a patriot roof rack on his 90. They're immense racks, but he suffered from the problem you describe. The bolts all seized in place, because the frame uses aluminium, tapped for steel bolts. The bolt heads (allen bolts) rounded off, meaning I had to drill a load out, and ended up having to heli-coil a couple of them. Absolute ball-ache. If they had designed the rack with bolt together frame ( ie steel bolt straight through two pieces of aluminiun) then at least you would be able to remove the bolts and clean up the aluminium.

I'd use plenty of copper grease, and put it in your diary for an annual strip and rebuild, along with a million other Defender related things

My patriot is powder coated. The surfaces are fine but the threaded holes are weeping a bit as the stainless bolts corrode the aluminium. I'm not overly worried - I dont regularly take it to pieces (in fact I can't think why I would unless I wanted to replace a part) and at least I can strip it down if required and, worst case, re-cut the threads.

I don't think the introduction of copper slip will help - it's essentially an electrical reaction so the copper will have no insulating effect. Better to wrap everything in PTFE.

Maybe in a few years I'll restore it with an insulator but at the moment I'll not worry (at least it won't rattle itself apart Wink) One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
