And away we go again! S3 V8 project...
Right

Time to start another little project.
Give a warm welcome to Ashley, one of Brittish Leylands finest last of line Land Rovers,
Being one of the last, it has suffered major terminal rust to the chassis from the gear box backwards.
It's pretty much the rear tub that's holding it together!

They really did use some quality steel in the early 80s Rolling with laughter

Ashley was purchased through a forum member quite a while ago, and has been sat in a barn waiting his turn to be refreshed, today was his lucky day.

This is a genuine off farm condition series 3 showing what I can make out a genuine 44,000 miles, after removing many potato sacks, bale twine, syringes (that was a lucky escape) Neutral sheep marking Dye, various rusty spanners, and all the other associated crap a livestock farmer would carry around, I finally got to see it in all it's glory.

When I picked him up he was dumped on to my trailer with a forklift, due to 4 flat bald tyres which obviously had not turned for many many years, and all looking rather sad, I did wonder what the hell I had brought?
The joys of buying without looking! Shocked

The rear spring shackles do not have a home anymore, simply thin air.

I had no idea of it's mechanical state, the front prop was missing, although under the bonnet the Diesel engine did look all complete and original, untouched by farmer giles hands!

So, time to break out the pressure washer, an hour or so later and we had a reasonable looking motor, the dash came up well, and surprisingly quite tidy looking. Smile

So the next thing was to see if it would actually go?
A battery was fitted after replacing the terminals, we had ignition....
One flick of the key and it actually burst in to life and ran! In fact it ran bloody well....
Not what I was expecting. Shocked

I decided to switch it off, top up the oil fill up the bone dry rad, pour in 10ltrs of red diesel and let it run.
Away it went again, expecting it to slowly die as it used up the old fuel, and thoughts of having to bleed the system.

He ran for a good couple of hours on tick over, and amazingly all the electrics worked!
Heater, wipers, lights etc....
Not bad for a BL classic which going by the last tax disc was last used around 1996?

So, all clean and running (well!) would it move?
Foot on the clutch, straight to the floor, Censored !
A quick check in the clutch master cylinder confirmed this hadn't seen any liquid for a while?
A dash of fluid, a few pumps of the pedal saw the clutch return from the dead Shocked

It was just getting better!

All gears worked, transfer box worked and felt surprisingly good.
Didn't get much joy from the brakes, but I wasn't really expecting to!

a quick trip down the garden confirmed he should be all ok.

So, the plan for Ashley?

He has a nice new galvanised chassis sat next to him, and a very nice running 1987 SD1 3.5 V8 to keep me entertained for the winter months.
The plan is to recapture my yoof! Laughing

I had dropped a V8 into a series many years ago, and fell in love but couldn't afford to run it on apprentice wages amounting to £66 a week!

So time to have a trip down memory lane, he's not being restored, body will stay as it is, series box will stay, and will run on early RR diffs, 7,50 tyres, and overdrive.
He's going to be a weekend hack, Green lane toy.

Can't wait, more to follow...... Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Ashley looks quite straight on the outside and the plan sounds good (if you can stick to it and resist the urge to do that little bit extra Very Happy ) looking forward to see how this progresses.
How late a s3 is he, as he hasn't got the 90 rear light layout of the very last ones.
That old engine wants to keep going, maybe for the next project Laughing

It was registered early 84, I know I'm going to kick myself in a few years time by taking it away from it's standard form,
But every mod I do to it I will try to make reversable.

I will hang on to the old engine, incase I feel the urge to revert to standard one day.
The hardest decision was not to coil it with Range rover running gear! Laughing

Exterior will stay the same, except for a limestone roof, wheels, and front grille.
This is being done for my partner to use, so may end up with a bling interior! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"
