Hi Charcoal... I've been thinking about this one... I do like a challenge.... Rolling with laughter

A couple of things that maybe worth a try... Totally random here...

Have you ran an extra earth from the engine block to the battery or chassis?... Sometimes you can use a negative jump lead for this... (it's a good way of checking that your earth is ok)

Also, have you checked that the fuel hasn't got any water in it?... I've seen that before and on a petrol engine a small amount can cause havoc... Especially with fuel injected cars...

Just some random ideas

Hope you sort it..

Regards

Tim It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse...

Thanks for the suggestions Tim, I did notice while replacing the ignition coil that an earth wasn't connected properly, amending it made no difference though. Can always try with a separate cable though. I'm sure there is no water in the fuel, will be fitting an aux fuel tank soon which will mean the tank will get emptied yet again anyway.

Thanks Clayton, will have two pairs of carbs to try when they arrive Thumbs Up 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Have you tried reversing the coil polarity to see it if makes a difference? Confused I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Haven't tried that actually, upon more research it sounds like that can cause starting problems and misfires under load. Before I try it, it shouldn't cook the ignition module right? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

It shouldn't harm the module as it only reverses the direction of the electron flow. I say it shouldn't as I've known a few examples where the coil was mistakenly connected incorrectly and not caused any damage. In fact one engine would only start with the polarity reversed........and for the life of me I still cant understand why as in reality all it does it make the spark at the plugs jump in the opposite direction. Modern coils with distributor less ignition often have half the cylinders on reverse to the the others; you could see the effect of this by looking at the sparking plugs whereby half would wear the central electrode and the others the earth electrode. Good luck Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

This afternoon I switched the polarity of the coil. There is no noticeable change in cold starting the engine. This evening I left work without warming up the engine first and had no misfires. I had been tarting around with the choke though after starting it, pulling it in and out to find the best position to hold it in. So if the polarity of the coil didn't fix it that more or less confirms it's a problem with the carburettors. The polarity also did not cure the misfires at motorway speeds. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

A few days have passed since I swapped the polarity of the ignition coil and I've had to do quite a few cold starts. Each time I've been able to drive away right after getting her going and not had a single misfire because of it. Many thanks Ricky for suggesting something that never even appeared to be wrong (power is now going into -1 terminal instead of +15). Maybe the battery had it's polarity swapped to use radio equipment as she was an airport vehicle many years ago. Anyway I still have the misfire at high speeds so the carburettors I bought will not go to waste. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Yep Clayton! Turns out the slightest bit of moisture in the air makes the misfires come back. At least most cold starts are in the cold with no serious moisture. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Quick update guys. New carburettors are fitted and the engine ran so much better. Started with less that a single revolution and sounded as smooth as a sowing machine. The reason I'm talking in past tense is because it will die on its own and if that happens it can't be started for another hour or so, when running it will run perfectly fine while revving. I'm fairly sure its low state of tune is flooding the engine on idle causing this. Will try and correct the mixture tomorrow so if anyone has any other suggestions in the mean time I'd like to hear them. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Had a right fiddle with them this afternoon with no success. When I took the elbows off the plastic tube behind the carburettors had a big puddle of petrol in it. I lowered the pressure in the regulator, set the jets to about 2mm below the bridge (half a turn as suggested on another forum). It can run for a bit but then the idle will decrease and stop and if it does it again wont start again, will fire a few times if you try and start it again quickly but doesn't catch on. Anything else I should look at? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

What have you turned the fuel pressure down to?

From memory, I used to use ~3 but that was for a 4 litre RV8 with richer needles Richard
