I was looking for a good trolley jack for the 110. Or a decent bottle jack with a wide enough head to use under the axle. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I bought a 3 tonne SGS for use with my far more lardy D3 and it works perfectly. I can't see it having any problem with a Defender.

Just make sure they go high enoough, also in the furture.
My Jack is high enouhg for my 235 85 16 BFG mt's but not for my 35"simexes The right side is not a problem I can fit the Jack under the diff housing but the left side I just can't get high enough. That 3-tonne SGS jack looks to me to be exactly the same as the generic far-eastern 3-tonne jacks from Sealey, Machine Mart, and all the other suppliers.
They seem to be generally reasonable units, but not as good as the British-made trolley jacks of 40 years ago (which of course, aren't made any more because far-east imports drove all the manufactureres out of business  ). |

I'm very wary of bottle jacks with tiny surface area points of contact.
The force on that small end is immense and apart from the damage they cause, are easily dislodged as the vehicle pivots. Try and get a jack with a large cup is my advice. |

Yes, I agree,...that small surface area would be a worry to me.
I had the same issue on another car years ago, so I got a steel "pad" made up, about 7" x 7" to place between the jack & the chassis, the pad had a welded metal fabrication underneath to locate the jack head,...easy to make, and it worked. I even put a rubber "pad" on top to protect the chassis! Pickles. |

I'm thinking of buying a decent trolley jack and axle stands for the SVX. Would the below package from SGS be a good one to buy? 3T HD garage jack weighing 50.6 kilos with 520mm lifting capacity, large 130mm saddle and possibility to add as option a rubber pad to protect chassis, plus 2x 6T ratchet axle stands with max height 605mm...
What say? Also free UK delivery, but I may have a solution for getting it over here some time this year FOC.

The trolley jack is the same one that I've got, shown above. It's a bit of a beast but is great quality and more than capable of lifting a Defender.
I'm not sure about the lifting pad for this application. You'd only need it to jack under the chassis but the jack won't go high enough (535mm) to lift the chassis any sort of useful amount. To lift an axle, you'd be better off with the cup as supplied with the jack. The axle stands are absolutely fine. Costco does an aluminium one for about £80 - 2 tonne I think. I have it and it is fine for occasional use.

I have the SGS 2 tonne long reach jack. It's an absolute beast and afraid of no job:

Lifts heavier vehicles than the Defender no issue. I collected mine, it weighs a lot so not sure delivery is much of an affordable option. It inspired me to just recently buy more of their kit from air tools to cabinets and they delivered to France on a couple of pallets for a pretty competitive price. Very happy with all of it. |

I have the same jack from SGS as Darren and use it to change over sets of wheels on a D4 and a Puma 110.
It is very well constructed and heavy and IMHO, better made than the imported equivalents. I have the pad which is very sturdy and use it in the metal cup under the jacking points on the Disco chassis rails. This works fine even though the Disco tries to keep it's wheels on the ground when you jack, there is enough lift. On the Defender, I don't use the chassis as the rails are already 35cm off the ground. The only slight snag is that the cup on is jack is very wide and won't fit in the gap in the front axle where the official jacking point is. So I use the rubber pad in the cup under where the "C" part of the radius arms fit under the axle which is right next to the designated jacking point. On the rear axle there is enough space to jack where the manual says you should. I always put the jack in from the ends not the sides on the Defender. I also have a pair of their axle stands but haven't used them yet |
