LRM Play Day
Anyone else try out the LRM Pay and play day yesterday? Thought I'd give it a try as its not a million miles away. You basically got an hour and a half to drive round a few lanes around the fields, a couple of sections through trees and a bit of a splash too. Not sure I'll bother next year but the best bit had to be the 'elephant footprints'...gave the old girls suspension a bit of a work out Very Happy

Good photos.

Where about was it? I didn't know it was happening. How much did they sting you for 90 minutes may I ask?

I've got an even better video...just got to work out how to post it.
It was £15 and with a chat by Heritage insurance and Skytag at the briefing, it felt like a bit of a sales promotion. Having said that, it was well organised and plenty of happy marshals around the course although doubt they had much to do as you'd have struggled to get even a standard Freelander stuck. If you've never been off road before it would have been a good introduction. 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

As one of the happy Marshalls thank you for the comments.
For most of the course we were only there for a bit of traffic regulation and to make sure no one disappeared off across the fields.
It was at the Experience the country site at Newton Longville which is just outside Bletchley.
I spotted several people from here going around. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Ramsay, yours must have been the smart looking Keswick Green 110 parked up before the tree section. You must have had a quiet day but must say the marshalls were all nice and friendly regardless! 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

That was me.
I had a very quiet day. Managed to walk 19 k and get some writing done in between customers. One of my colleagues got through 9 episodes of Prison break!
it was nice to see some interesting vehicles getting used. From a Series 1 in the morning to various Discovery variants. One Freelander 2 ( it graunched a bit but seemed to go all the way round) to lots of nice 90's, 110's, and a 130. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

You got some good photos at least! Would have gone if it were closer!

Steve_c3 - I'd be interested to hear/see what roll cage you have inside your 110? James

I went along in the 90, only 10-miles from me and I had been itching to try out the new auto-box off-road so it was a perfect opportunity and would probably go again.
The weather was fantastic and I managed to get the full 2-hours in, they were happy to send people around right up to about 20-mins before the end of the session and that was (just) enough time to make it round again (think I went around 4-times in total).
As already stated, assistance and advice (if required) were readily to hand and it was nice to have a quick chat with them rather than just driving around in silence (if you were on your own like me).
Nice course, nothing challenging but it showed the uninitiated what their vehicles could do. The only problem I found was that I couldn't lock the auto-box into 1st so I was having to dab the brakes on the descents (note to self, adjust the shifter-cable!). Also it proved that the Cooper ST Maxx does have its good points after all, being so AWFULL on road I am glad that they finally proved their worth on the soft so I might be keeping them after all. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

"You don't like the ST Maxx tyres on road??? I thought they were supposed to be very good??"

No, they are ok in the dry but awful in the wet (but then, being quite open tread what can you expect?).
Previously I had been running BFG AT's for many years and they handled just like a road tyre an all & every situation so perhaps I had been spoilt?
The ST Maxx remind me a bit of my old bar-grips (but they were bad in both the dry AND wet!).

Until last weekend I was seriously thinking of binning them and going for BFG AT's again, they have been on for 3Kmiles and they hadn't gown on me at all however at least their performance in the soft is a redeeming feature so I will probably stick with them for now. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

Treat them as the mud tyre that they (nearly) are and you will be ok however if you do most of your mileage on the tarmac (as I do nowadays) then prepare to be disappointed.
That said, people seem to like moaning about tyre-noise (you should try driving a MOD S111 fitted with Extra-Grips to experience real tyre-noise, 36-hours in that and you would have something to complain about!) but I haven't noticed it at all so perhaps that is another point in its favour? ONE LIFE, GET IT!
