I should receive my Howling Moon rooftent this week and was wondering if anyone had constructed a frame for installing and removing it. If so can you supply some dimensions?
I can't get down to Flatdog to get it fitted. I did have the use of a gantry crane last week but a mix up with delivery has scuppered that plan. Now to construct a lifting frame to allow me to install it myself. Anyone done this (other than whats on youtube?) |

We use a couple of recovery straps and a second vehicle and slide it up/down them depending on wether we're taking it off or putting it on...

The straps go to the front bumper of my Defender, big recovery vehicle style ratchet straps are spot on because you can get the tension the same for both, this pic was taken when I was using the winch to adjust the tension but with experience we found the ratchet straps were easier. I also made a steel trolley for the tent to make it easier to move around on the ground and to move in and out of it's winter storage. It's worth considering if, like me, you end up trying to move the tent around on your own when it's off the vehicle. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

The straps look like a great idea. I can understand that it would be possible to lift it onto a trailer but getting it up high enough for a roof rack needs some lifting device. I simply was intending to build an A frame ( like a kids swing) and use a rope / pulley to lift it up then drive under it and lower it down again. Wan going to use some 60x160 CLS timber for the frame, a couple of eye bolts and a small pulley block. I understand that it weighs about 64kg so its hard to lift up without some help!

We ended up using two 4.2m long 6"x2" wood runners (held together with wood spacers in a sort of ladder arrangement). The tent was placed on the top of the wood runners then we raised the runners up a bit using a workbench and a set of step ladders. The tent slid along the wood runners and right onto the roof rack. Two of us managed it OK but its not for the feint hearted! We installed it to open on the passenger side. Anyone else using this configuration? Does the edge need to overhang the roof rack to slide the lower section of tent into the runner? cheers |

They are a pig to lift. I get some helpers to get both of ours on.
Thread creep a little but do any of you HM owners store the tent on its side when not in use? My garage has them flat on the floor and wondering about leaning them against a wall instead. Just didn't want to damage the thing! 1951 80" S1 2.0 1995 110 300TDI 1995 90 300TDI |

We store ours on it's side with the hinge at the bottom, never had a problem with it as a result of this. I made a trolley for it, a simple steel platform for it to sit on with 4 castor wheels and some foam padding. It then has an arm that comes up nearly the full height of the tent that the tent is bolted to using the normal mounting channel and a couple of bolts. As well as supporting the tent it makes it much easier to move around. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

I put off my tent every winter and put it on following spring. I tie two rope ends to the side of the roof rack, route it to the ground, put the tent on it and loop the rope back on the roof rack. Next I climb on the vehicle and with assistance of my girlfriend by pulling the rope I pull the tent on its place. Not so difficult and takes less than 5 minutes. Much longer is to tight all the nuts (I have rather slim roof rack, or my hand is too big). Janusz
