You survived an assault by two grown men and 4' scaffold bar with just a breaker bar? Wow, totally Van Damme (or if you're younger, Jack Reacher). Was that on PlayStation or XBox Rolling with laughter Monsieur Le Grenadier

I have also got some Clarke brand tools from Machine Mart in my kit but don't rate these at all. Much poorer quality and haven't worn well.

I would second this. I bought the Clarke Pro 1/4" and 1/2" ratchets when they had VAT free offer on. They are the most frustrating tools I own. The thumb switch for changing direction is too big, with no resistance so it's impossible not to knock it in use. It's ones times switches direction mid job because the switch moves under its own momentum. I have launched them across the workshop in apoplectic rage several times.

It might depend upon which range you get from Machine Mart. I've got several sets from their 'pro' range and haven't had any problem with them, I'd rate them on a par with the Halfords 'Advanced' range as they now seem to call it.

Halfords professional do seem to consistently get good feedback on enthusiast forums.

Bahco has already been mentioned. You can often get very good pricing on Bahco socket sets from Amazon.

Lidl is sometimes a good source for everyday spanners and sockets that you don't mind abusing, lending out and having rattling around in the back - just you never know when there is going be any there. Never had any problems with them and the best sort of spanner is the one that is to hand when you want it, not locked away in the workshop half a mile away.

I have started using Teng Tools a lot now, a local place by me often has deals on, they are good quality, I have abused them something awful in my job and they keep going Thumbs Up I have only so far broken one set of side cutters (trying to cut something a little thick) the store offered an immediate swap and split up a set on the shelf to honour the lifetime guarantee.

They do some good combination kits, sockets/spanners/screwdrivers with torx bits etc. I keep a set in each motor just in case. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

I would second Lidl stuff. All german made quality and fairly well priced. You just have to keep popping into store to see what they have. (might be available online also I guess)

I bought most of my tools in the late 1960's. I purchased a combination of Britool and Snap-on as I was using them everyday professionally and they have stood the test of time. However, once I became a "desk jockey" and only used the tools to maintain my own vehicles I have purchased tools from Halfords and have been very impressed with their quality. I don't think you'll regret buying Halfords tools if it's for your own maintenance and with their replacement guarantee I think it's a no brainer. Defender 90XS SW

Different perspective due to availability down this way (NZ) ...

A few brands I rate rattling about in the kit:

Facom (hammers, 1/2" 1/4" socket sets, torque wrench)
Carolus/Gedore (3/4" sockets, torque wrench, gasket scraper, strap wrench...)
Hazet (flarenut tools, punches, lots of odds and sods)
Sidchrome (1/2" socket set)
Gearwrench (open end spanner and angly dangly ratchets, telescoping prybar)
Bahco (shifters, 1/4" sockets, files)
Kinchrome (torx set, vernier calipers)
Mitutoyo (DTI)

In terms of electrical:
Knipex (circlip pliers, drivers, wire cutters, multigrips)
Felo (drivers)
Weldmüller (wire strippers, crimping tools)
Hakko soldering iron (wish I had a Pace though)
Steinel PCB heat gun

Lots of stuff where they tend to just make one thing:

Thor Hammers
Bessy clamps
Vise-Grip Vice-grips

Power tools:
Dewalt angle grinder
Makita 18V drill, jigsaw

That's from memory, lot's more if I open up the machining drawers - I guess the stuff listed above is what has ended up under the vehicle at some stage. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...
