Heater air temperature - HUGE fluctuations
In the course of a 130-mile journey in freezing temperatures yesterday (no snow, just ice) my heater started behaving oddly.

The air temp coming out of the heater would fluctuate, varying from almost no heat at all to hot, without any adjustment of the temp knob. In general the slower I drove the colder the air, for example stopping at traffic lights and it went cold, driving at 50mph and back to scorching.

The heater has always been a bit odd as noted elsewhere in this forum, it is either off or thermonuclear, getting the in-between settings is not easy, but it has never done this before - it has always maintained a fairly constant temp. The temperature gauge on the dash was steady at normal all this time, and there were no indications that the engine temp was fluctuating.

My first thought was perhaps low coolant level but I checked it cold this morning at it is up to the mark. Could it be an airlock perhaps? Is the valve wonky?

if anyone has any ideas, or can reassure me that this is just another Defender feature, I would be grateful.

(Vehicle is a 2007 Puma County DC, no aircon, just the bog standard heater).

When I was out last year with the response team taking medical staff on their rounds, I'd be waiting outside with the engine running and the heater on to keep warm. After a couple of minutes (perhaps 10 at most), the engine would have cooled sufficiently from the viscous fan that there'd be no heat from the heaters.

Right pain really. Webasto for me I think Thumbs Up One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

That's a relief, I was afraid that I had another fault rather than a feature! Thanks everyone.

In the course of the same journey I also developed intermittent dip beam - the headlights would spontaneously extinguish completely, without any warning, usually in a very dark place with oncoming traffing and bends. This seems to be a 'feature' of the dip/flasher/horn stalk switch, but only when it is warm. If you touch the stalk slightly towards the main beam position, the lights go out. So for most of the journey I was driving with a finger on the stalk to keep the lights on!

It is amazing that with all these foibles we still LOVE our Defenders!

I have always felt that with any Defender (or the earlier proper Land Rovers for that matter) they leave the factory unfinished; it is the owner who then finishes them off, putting right the wrong things, adjusting, improving, and turning the loosely-assembled kit of parts that Solihull shipped into a proper reliable vehicle. It's a very British thing to do - no-one else would put up with it.

Mine definitely is not like this. My heater is either scalding hot or clat cold, there is no middle ground. I left it stationary today in -3c for 20 mins and it was a furnace inside.

Particularly annoying is the way it cooks your left shin while leaving your right foot frostbitten.

i've noticed my van has been struggling to keep heat in the engine with the heater on flat out.

the transit...ala pma engine is fine but it does normally carry around 2 tonne out of the yard in the morning

I had a TD5 Defender and in winter the temp guage never got to above the blue section. After an icey drive to my mums house at Balmoral i called the supplier to complain and they said Defenders come with either a cold or hot country thermostat and that was the fault... they said a Defender has to cope with pulling a 3t trailer and loaded to the gun'nels with tropical survival kit then keep the engine hot in -30 winters.
No thermostat can do that? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Spent the last few days in lots of very slow moving traffic and each time the temp gauge would plummet to just above minimum and the heat from the blowers would disappear accordingly - only glad I didn't get stopped for any significant time! Confused
