light guards - help - DONE ! PICS !
Hi

I bought a set of light guards yesterday for my defender ...

However I can't understand the fitting instructions ... Embarassed ... can someone tell me what is the meaning of the steps marked with the green line plz ... ?! Thank you !!

It looks like riv nut installation to me using the old fashion method

Measure outside of rivnut, believe a M6 rivnut is 9 mm OD. Use masking tape on panel, mark position of hole and drill carefull. Rivnut wants to be a snug fit in drilled hole

The rivnut can be set using a tool like the memfast tool or a more professional (and expensive) plier type tool.
If just setting a few rivnuts you can do the following.

1) Spin a nut on to suitable bolt
2) Put rivnut on bolt up to the nut
3) Place rivnut in drilled hole
4) Using two spanners, keep the nut stationary and tighten the bolt

This will have the effect of drawing/collapsing rivnut onto the wing

Some anti corrosion paste or waxoyl between a steel rivnut and ali wing might help prevent bi metallis electolytic cororision although have not fund it to be a major problem

PS Might be worth trying in on some scrap metal first before drilling wing. Downward pressure on rivnut, washer or some form of anvil to stop rivnut spinning helps

Hi Brendan ... Thank you for you patience, but don't understand a thing about what you said ! Embarassed

That bolt on the picture 13 (there's is only one in the box) must be a disposable one ... as that metal plate ... they're used to do what ?

What am I supposed to do with those ? And what do I do winth the nut ? If I had plenty I would go for try and error, but don't want to go that way ... Any more hel ? Anyone fitted a set ? Pics maybe ? Embarassed Regards

As Leeds said this is the tool and the steps to put the rivnuts in place. The tool consist in the bolt, the nut and the piece of metal with the hole also you need the spanner and the hex key

So following the instruction of leeds you put the rivnut in place, aftre that you must unscrew the bolt, take out the metal piece and then install the guard using the provided bolts to fix it.

You can also you can rent/buy a rivnut tool and replace the steps 13 and 14 / 11 and 12.

I have to tighten the rivet with it fitted inside the drill I made on the wing, is that it ? But wont he fall on to the inside of the wing ??!! Embarassed Regards

Dont worry,

Yes, you must fit the rivnut attached to the tool inside the drilled hole and make all the operation.

The drilled hole should have the diameter of the cilinder of rivnut + 0.1 mm,
The flange of the rivnut prevents the falling inside

When you use the tool as in the normal popup rivets the lower part will be deformed fiing the rivnut in the panel.

Probably best to try it out first.

If you don't have any spare ones to practise with I may well be able to send you some to play with. Drop me a pm if you need some to play with.

Whilst technically the drill hole sizes is 0.1 mm larger then the rivnut od i.e. 9.1 mm drill size. Most people do not have access to drill sizes in 0.1mm increments. Drilling it out at 9mm or whatever the od of the rivnut is will be fine.


Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question. However there can be silly answers Razz

Better to ask then drop a stupid clanger which might prove expensive.

sorry for this stupid questions ... but all the rivnuts I ever fitted were the "standard" ones that I used on my SIIA ...

My problem is that I did not see that flange on the rivnuts ... they all looked like a clilinder ... now that I removed them from the package ( Exclamation ) Embarassed I saw it !

But why do I have to tighten that disposable bolt first ? And do I thghten it all the way down ? Regards

Before you tighten it the disposable bolt, the rivnut will look like this:



Once you've tightened it, it should look like this:



Where the sides have crushed it should hold your front panel, and provide a threaded hole for you to bolt the top bracket into.

To work out how much to tighten it, it's best to buy a bag of them, and experiment. Hope this makes sense. Thumbs Up Peter

As you tighten a rivnut up with it firmly held against the wing/panel whatever there are sort of three stages of 'tightness'


!) Minimal as any slack is taken up

2) Medium as the rivnut crushes. Takes about 5 full turns. (Have not counted them)

3) Suddenly goes 'hard' Rivnut is firmly on panel. Little point in going further as you could cause damage.



Practise first on som scrap metal rather then on a nice new wing. If you want some to practise with give me a shout.

I don't have any spares to practice on ... so I want to be very careful before I try to fit this stuff ... but your (all of you) replies did help a lot ... Thumbs Up I was having a hard time trying to understand the instructions ... Embarassed
It's been raining a lot here and as I don't have a garage I have to wait till the rain stops to go and fit the guards ...

Don't worry too much, you can buy those rivnuts in any good nuts & bolt store.
So, buy 2 or 3 and the make some practice before use it in your Defender.

I tried two stores, AKI and Leroy Merlin, and so far got nothing ... I have to go downtown to the "Casa dos Parafusos" ( The Bolt House" Very Happy ) ... tomorrow !

Allways you found the same store everywere here is calling "Casa del perno" (Bolt house)
First, to do not going there to found nothing, call them and ask for a "porca do rebite" (rivet nut in portuguesse)
