Old head units...
Do head units start to give up as they get older?

I have a Sony CD head unit in my car which is about ten years old, it's been in the Land Rover for the last eight of those. It has started to become fussy about picking up FM stations - it won't find any on autoseek except for Radio 2 but if I manually seek to the relevant frequencies I can pick up other stations, local and national, so the signal and aerial must be ok?

I'm wondering if it's getting old and something is starting to fail inside.

They can do.
Mine is playing up a bit on and off but that's due to the faceplate.

They do take a battering in the Defender, it's all the vibration etc.

Thanks.

They're not that expensive for the sort I would be after (basic as they come), so I may just buy a new one and see.

It could be the circuitry inside is degrading, but it's more likely I'd say that the aerial wiring or connection is degrading. Enough that the seek processing can't determine the signal, but not enough that you car hear a difference?
