Optimum rpm range for road driving with the Puma engine
Can anyone tell me the sweet spot rpm wise for the Defender Puma engine? I appreciate it will depend on what you are doing, but say on a long flat road?

Switzerland 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
Cruising on a long flat road... That means in 6th gear. Mine feels perfectly at ease to do that at anything between 60kph and 120kph, that means between 1250 and 2500 rpm. Get a feel for the engine, you should be able to hear and feel what is comfortable for it.

As ericvv says. they have quite a wide rev range - not like an older type diesel which very much had a "sweet spot".
A good quality remap will still help to make it feel less restrained though.

From an economy point of view keep below 2000rpm but better still forget economy and just enjoy it Thumbs Up

I find with a 2.4 that 2000 - 2200 is the ideal 'accomplish anything' slot whether towing or cruising. Its all downhill after that !
Above 3000rpm is just pants - all noise and no action IMHO although the odd Italian tune up clears the cobwebs and is fun Smile

1,250rpm in 6th sounds too low to me, I'd be dropping down to 5th well before that. 6th gear is an overdrive and whilst it may not sound laboured, I'd be wondering what the fuelling strategy would have to try and do if you put more than a modicum of throttle.

For the 2.2 JLR quote that 90% of peak power is available between 2,200 and 4,350prm with max figures of 122PS@3,500rpm & 360Nm@2,000rpm.

Some of what I've found after a few trips usually towing @1200Kg of Tvan...
I find that at 95-100Km/h(just over 2'000rpm) on level or slight undulating road is the happy spot.
Under 90Km/h(under 2'000rpm) I'm dropping out of 6th and it makes for a tiresome trip.
In the hills I crank it up to the legal 110km/h(@2200rpm) and find I'm passing folk up hill.

I can't find the figures quickly but IIRC peak torque is 2'000rpm so if the turbo is spooled up just above this it holds on better.
(figures posted while 'ol fat fingers was doing this, thanks Supacat).
I also find I'm get to 2'800rpm in the higher gears when on the way up the box for best changes with the van on, around 4ton GVM. Cheers,

You say it there, we talk about cruising on flat roads, which means no more than a slight constant push on the throttle to keep it steady at 60kph, and if needed to speed up from there no real power demand to accelerate more than just oh so smoothly. The Puma sounds pretty happy to do that. If I would need to speed up at anything more than I feel the engine feels comfy with, I immediately switch back to 5th. Seems to work for me, just feel sorry for all those frustrated drivers behind me who find that I am not getting out of the starting blocks fast enough. Can't care less actually. Laughing
