Setting up wheel bearings (New style)
So one of the jobs on my list is to replace the wheel bearings. Ive got a copy of the workshop manual of which there is an excerpt below. I've read this through a few times in preparation for the job and don't quite understand it.
How can you measure endfloat of your existing assembly and then refer to the table? Surely you would have to use a standard spacer of "XYZ" dimension to measure and then based on the results select the correct spacer. If you use your existing spacer you could potentially have a value below zero for endfloat but be unable to measure it for obvious reasons.
Am I missing something here?

To tell you the truth, I've changed many wheel bearings with this type of setup and just put the original spacers back in with the new bearings. I had one once that felt too tight to me so ordered a slighter thicker spacer and that sorted that.

Assemble initially with a purple (15.5mm) spacer in order to follow the wsm.
