Edinburgh with defender
Having never been; me and a friend are going to have a run up for a few days after easter...

I've heard it isn't a particularly car friendly city? can anybody recommend where to keep the car while I'm up there? id prefer a secure car park (don't mind paying) my hotel wants £12 a night which if its secure i don't mind but they haven't got back to me with details about it...

also is the drive up from newcastle anything special, which route is best? I've been around peebles a lot for mountain biking but never further north.

Have a look here:

http://en.parkopedia.co.uk/parking/edinburgh/

If your staying at The Sheraton be aware that the height restriction is 2.05M!! Found that you the last time I was there after the hotel confirming my 110 would fit Evil or Very Mad

The on street parking is expensive and the parking wardens are ruthless!! Most of the multi storey car parks aren't tall enough for a standard Defender with maximum height restrictions of 2M.

If I'm in the 110 I normally park at the airport (secure) or Ingliston P&R for a day visit and catch a tram into the city centre, saves a lot of grief and only costs £1.50 each way from Ingliston and around £10 from the airport (be aware the ticket machines only accept coins and if you buy a ticket on the arm they charge the maximum daily single ticket price of around £14)

No doubt there will be someone along with better local information as I try to avoid Edinburgh City as much as I can Thumbs Up 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

Take the A68 up as this takes you through the borders and up over the hills to Edinburgh.

My advice - Give the A1 a miss - loads of lorries and not a lot to see. The A68 is a cracking road a bit like a switchback in places and the scenery is lots better.
Can't help with any parking advise tho.

Yes - A68 via Jedburgh as recommended, or the Wooler-Coldstream Road (leaves the A1 near Morpeth... the 2 hours 43 mins route on your map). Either are good, interesting and plenty to see. Watch for speed cameras on either.

Like Jomara says - the P&R leaving the car near the airport (Ingliston) is good, but you're not supposed to leave your car overnight. Parking is free, and only £1.50 on the tram into the centre of town. No height restrictors at the P&R.

Another good option is to leave your car outside town using on-street parking and get the bus. This is a good one.... Park at Morrisons Hunters Tryst (http://your.morrisons.com/store-finder/Store-Details/?recordid=174 ) and get the bus number 27 straight into Princes Street (the city centre)... The Morrisons is right on the city bypass so dead easy for access Thumbs Up

As you're a cyclist, Edinburgh's pretty cycle-friendly, I cycle into town (about 17 miles for me) quite often... you can do that almost entirely off-road. Usually get the train one-way to ease the burden Smile Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

A68/A7 are sprinkled liberally with speed cameras and some are set just a few miles an hour over the speed limits. The blue meanies in the city will ticket a hearse at a red light but if you speak Nigerian you will probably get off!
City centre parking is to be avoided but outer areas are free and safe as any other city. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

We went to Edinburgh late last year for a few days and I left the car in Q-Park Quartermile. It was an easy fit in the 90 and there were quite a few other Defenders in there. According to the QPark website it's a 2.1 metre restriction. I can't remember the price but it was in there for 3 days and I remember it not being anything unreasonable.

The walk from there to the city centre, castle, national museum etc is not very far.

As everybody else has said, A68 is a fantastic driver's road but I have never seen such a concentration of speed cameras on any road! Admittedly the Courts forced the Police not to arm them all at once as that was tantamount to entrapment but even with that proviso there is a hell of a lot of the 8ugg3r5!
