CDE-133BT update
Can't remember this being discussed before on here, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

According to Alpine, there is a bluetooth update available which (theoretically) improves the Bluetooth audio capability, to show track names, allows control etc.

http://www.alpine.co.uk/support/bluetooth-...oup-2.html

HOWEVER, there is a warning that Defender head units should NOT have this update applied... so are we actually forever stuck on an old software version that cannot brought up to date? Rolling Eyes

Or is it just a warning to cover Alpine/LR in case the update process goes wrong and "bricks" the head unit?

Anyone done this and broken the head unit or does it work ok?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Also seems to imply you do not need to update if your phone pairs okay, although the functionality with my iPhone 6 leaves a lot to be desired... Big Cry

If you are able to pair your mobile phone without any problems, there is no need to update the software. Rog... Mr. Green

I did say the update is for Bluetooth audio, not hands free phone pairing Wink  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Martin,

I have a Parrot Asteroid that has given me faultless service for the period it has been fitted. Several other users over time experienced issues with their units (there is some detail within the forum) with them eventually dying on them.
I made a 'personal decision' not to carry out any upgrades to my unit as I was happy with it's functionality. It still works fine today. A recent upgrade I carried out on my Nokia company phone now means the battery lasts only 50% of the time it used to.....

I am a great advocator of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' if you're happy with it.....leave it....rushing to get the latest upgrade can in my experience leave you up a dead-end street with nowhere to go but having to possibly shell out for something else.

Just my pennethworth. Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Looking at the alpine website it says that updating software may disable the Bluetooth. Could it be that defender head units are either programmed differently for some reason or because they are supplied with a new vehicle?

Also I can't see there being many if any other new cars now days supplied with a stereo of this kind, they are more built in units now days.

I know there's a warning from Alpine, I mentioned and linked to it in my first post. I am trying to see if anyone's updated anyway (by mistake or otherwise) and what the outcome is.

All firmware updates can go wrong, presumably even on the 'aftermarket' CDE-133BT but Alpine will support it, as you have bought one at retail price.

If the CDE-133BT factory fitted in the Defender IS different and the update WILL break it, then I'm not going there!

If it's just Alpine exempting themselves from liability if a customer updates the factory fitted (so not retail channel) head unit, then that is different.

Ditto LR will not honour the warranty should anything go wrong as the head unit will have been bricked when being 'modified' from their fitment.

Alpine do not say it WILL fail, but MAY. Like any software update.

I don't want to update 'just because', but the control (play/pause/next) of my music over Bluetooth would be extremely useful to me. It appears to be included in this update, hence my interest in applying it.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Agree with your thoughts Martin, it sounds as though they are distancing themselves from warranty issues rather than there being a difference with the LR-supplied units. My Disco 'best bits'

And that's understandable if they've supplied them on the proviso that Alpine have nothing to do with the customer support Thumbs Up  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I Did try and do mine and the unit crashed... I was lucky enough that the dealer replaced mine as I'd asked them to do it first and they said that LR wouldn't do the upgrade FOC and I'd have to pay the Dealer directly...
It's something I'd like to have done also as it does improve the functionality of the Bluetooth also.... I did find the contact details for alpine... But never got around to contacting them... I think it'll be something I need to do soon though..

Cheers

Personally I feel the support page for the update is correct and worded appropriately.

Electronic firms usually test all relevant devices when any new firmware/software is issued and I can only think that Alpine have experienced trouble with the CDE-133BT head unit when testing the new upgrade with head units fitted to the latest spec Defenders, why else would they issue a detailed warning. Why this should be I would not wish to speculate but I am sure there has to be a valid reason.

I think what is prudent in any case is that because of the warning if anyone attempts this upgrade and the problem arises of lost Bluetooth connectivity then Land Rover will refuse to do anything about it stating that a warning was clearly given.

It may also be that Alpine are working on an update specifically for a Defender that will be released in due course.
