Range Rover TDV8
Hi guys,

Just a general question here, but has anyone ever owned a Range rover TDV8 as I just wanted to know what they were like to use as everyday cars and what their running costs were like. I would like to know what they are like off road as well as i would like to continue with the off roading trips top Wales.

I've just sold mine.
2011 4.4 TDV8

It was my everyday car and loved it. I live in wales on the side of a mountain (not a big one though)
I was getting about 25 MPG average.

Tips would be.
Make sure you have a warranty £1000 per year.
Keep it well serviced.

Apart from that there a great car and fantastic off road.

My dad has one of the last ones before the current model, Its a lovely bit of kit....


Like sat in a posh hotel lounge, I cannot find a picture of it outside but its a lovely blue color with a tasteful body kit and exhaust trim. I was concerned when my dad bought it.... At the end of the day its a bit like the Defender, as nice as it is you can see bits date back some what... also a lot to go wrong.. not just the normal stuff such as Sat nav, electric seats, but heated steering wheel, airmatic suspension, camera, basically buttons everywhere.


So dad took out the extended warranty and too be fair its pretty good, he has 3 cars so but uses this the most and regularly does the trip to his holiday house in France. He has had 38mpg and pretty much does over 30mpg on any run (he does get 30mpg out of a SL500 he has also so...)

Servicing is done at main dealer and is a lot, but its all relative? his car new was probably £80K ish so the last service with brakes and pads was just over £1000 is ok. If your looking at an earlier one (with a gear shift stick) then the prices do vary and I guess you would then use a specialist. I would still want a warranty....


No idea how good it would be off road, I guess very good as you can raise the suspension. It has buttons for all the different types of surface and cameras that look all over the place... I doubt you would want to do something that say a defender would as it just doesn't 'look' as rugged.


He likes it, lots of bits could be improved as I say many designs are very old school and certainly the rear hatch door / window does NOT shut like a £80K car should....


Nice place to be though and you do feel king of the road..

Has a few, and the daily driver

Current one is the best i have had ,, 09 Vogue SE,,

Bit of a story,, bought it when 18 months old, Dec 10 and 14k on it (LR Dealer principles car)

Bough a 2010 face lift to replace it,, and LR had it longer than i did (suspension senders, side camera's cruise radar etc etc,,)
sold it with 3 months,
Replace with a 12 plate 4.4,, just did not drive the same as the 09,, seams more noisy on acceleration, hated being left foot braked, just did not like, in comparison to the 09, so that was moved on

Fortunately never sold the 09, and still have it, now on 30k only,, and bar a set of rear pads, has been excellent, just back from Germany the other week, towing the race box well loaded,, 1000 miles in 22 hours, inc 3 hours wasted at the chunnel

Trip to the Pyrenees a few years ago,, fully loaded, 4 up with bags etc, and 4 quads on the back,, 75 on the cruise all the way down and back, non stop

Wow guys thanks for the tips, so it all sounds as though it comes down to perhaps the 3.6 and just to watch out for the turbos. Thank fully I did the brakes on my old Discovery 3 so they cant be too much different on the RR. I suppose what i want is the capability of the defender with the luxury looks and ride of a Range Rover. Its this or a subdued BMW 520 M sport Touring without any capabilities off road.

I bought an 07 TDV8 last year, as a replacement for my 2000 P38 Range Rover.

I haven't had cause to regret the decision, it's a wonderful car to live with, bags of power and some really well thought out features that just make life easier. MPG varies dramatically, depending on use but 25MPG is easy to maintain, careful motorway driving can see it into the mid 30s and even higher.

The turbo problems are often a result of bad servicing, there is a secondary filter that often (even by main dealers) gets overlooked during servicing and leads to a lack of oil flow through the turbo with the inevitable consequences. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Had the TD6, TDV8 and the 5.0 SC in L322 guise, my dad has the very last of the 3.6 TDV8s and I anticipate when I swap mine I will go for the 4.4 TDV8.

Just the most awesome everyday cars. And they do the off road bit very well even on standard road tyres. Put some AT or MT patterns on and you'll be gobsmacked at what they can do.

Use it for what it was meant for....

It's also worth looking at what you get for your money for £10k you can get a 2007 TDV8 VOGUE SE with all of the toys.

A similar aged defender 110 SW will cost you way more than that.

After running a number of RR's over the last 10 years however you need to consider the cost of road tax, insurance and primarily the cost of spares and repairs. We also never had a RR without a comprehensive warranty.

Examples.
My heated seats went on the TDV8, cost £800 per seat to replace the heater units alone.
Headlight on the TD6. £600 to replace.
Gearbox went on the TD6 at 120k miles, upwards of £5k to replace.
Air suspension collapsed on the TDV8, £600 to replace compressor.
Amplifier on TDV8 failed, £1200 to replace Big Cry
Road Tax £500+ per year.


The other thing is depreciation, not so much an issue if you're buying an old one but horrendous on anything remotely new.
£40k for a 2011 with 50k miles, 20k for mint 2008 with 50k miles
so at best you're gonna lose half your money in 3 years.

With a defender the drop off will be much slower.

This has to be the most optimistic thread that I've ever read on an L322 variant. I had one for years and I was always worried if it would start in the morning, or worst still get me back home.

These beasts, albeit lovely to lounge around in, are money pits just waiting to strip out your wallet. - Andrew -
