We're any defenders fitted with cruise control from the factory? I see numerous aftermarket kits, but also references to the ability to retrofit one to the td5 using existing circuitry in the ECU. If the circuitry exists, why have I not seen any factory cruise control pictures anywhere on line for the TD5?

I've been thinking of this mod as well. Urban Truck have a nice looking kit on their site. However I also read once that Pete at BAS said that a remap would require a mod for a CC upgrade. Given I am planning that as well, does anyone know what the Bobby Moore is? Monsieur Le Grenadier

no update or mod needed. But only works with standard transfer box. AFAIK

I've just purchased a Disco 2 cruise control setup. Maybe I'll try my hand at a retrofit.
Roel, thanks for the circuit diagram! So....pin 35 is the live 12v for the system and the remaining pins are grounds or switched logic circuits? Patrick |

I carried out this mod on mine and it transformed long drives. I'm 6 foot and even with taller seat rails fitted to straighten me out, I'd get an ache down the front of my right leg after half an hour. I fitted a Disco switch and did the wiring following some of the instructions I tracked down on line. The only part I couldn't get working was the resume function but to be honest I'd rather take it back up to speed gently to save fuel anyway! Coupled with a stage 1 remap it sits happily on motorways and pulled like a train down to the south of France this year even fully loaded with camping gear and up some nasty hills too. I'll try and post some pics shortly.

Where did you get the connector and terminals to mate to the disco switch? Also, did you incorporate a master on/off switch? Patrick |

Cheers. I cut the Disco connector off and used some standard connectors. The terminals and rubber bungs for the ECU came from an online electrical company...I'll try and track down the name. I had no need for an on/off switch so I just hit the set button and it's done. I ran some multi core cable down to the seat box so that I've got a spare cable for a rev counter (when I find one cheap enough!). Once set, it cancels the moment you touch the brake or clutch pedal. 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

I took a separate ingition live, not from the ecu. At first I had it connected as the circuit diagram but then without the master switch. I had sometimes a problem that suddely the ecu didn't react on the throttle pedal. I first tried cleaning the throttle pedal as mine gets dirty sometimes
 but that didn't help. I disconnected the CC completely and didn't have problems for months so I then used a other live feed with a switch and had no problem till now.
For Off-roaders like me who did the clutch pedal signal mod (disconnect the plug  ) The CC will switch off without this signal as the ecu sees that the revs go up and not the speed so it cuts out. Roel

So is it as simple as wiring the cruise control switch is as shown, no module needed?

FWIW, I’d like to install CC but I have enough to do around home. I found that removing one of the two springs on the throttle pedal makes a huge difference especially on long trips. Just undo the one away from the side panel and secure it up with a tie wrap. Simple and easy to do. Not cruise but its still a good mod.

No modules. Just two momentary contact buttons and/or an on/off switch. I took the 12v from the ECU power wire (to prevent any ground loops) and i do not have an on/off switch. It's always on in this case. It's been working for the longest time now. Additional mods in the ECU map: I've a 1.222 transfer box so i needed to modify the "valid gear ratio". I've also adjusted the cruise control PID, so it doesn't accelerate that hard as the original (disco 2 had smaller tyres) and the steady state is +/- 3kmh vs the original +/- 5kmh. the ECU pins are econoseal type (from my memory) and these are pretty easy to find online. you can either crimp the wires or solder them onto the pins. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At �125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island. |
