And importantly it works brilliantly if done right at the start

Pop the top off the connector, fill it with instant gasket sealant, cap back on, leave to set for a day or so. Some more garket sealer around the O-rings when you install the loom and you are good.

Or at least you stand a better chance of it not tracking down the wires to your ECU or dribbling out on to the aux belt.

^^ Exactly! You need to fill the inside of the connector shell with insulating electrical 'potting compound' or a similar product. The main problem with this loom is the result of the connector shell filling with oil which then tracks down each wire inside the insulation, along the interstices between the individual conductor strands. If the connector is properly potted, this cannot happen.

The connector was not intended to be submerged, which, in effect, it is.

Good description, that is what I was referring to about sealing it. Here the best stuff to use is a product called “Right Stuff”. Canadian Tire sells it

I filled mine with some tigerseal as I had a tube opened up already.

Hasn't caused any problems in 10 years yet.
