Advice please - 300Tdi clutch pedal spring
Hi all,

So, having had the Defender for a few months I've developed a left leg like Popeye's arm (less the tattoos). It's a 1998 300Tdi hard top.

I've been looking at the various threads about the clutch pedal spring and as far as I can make out the pedal didn't get really firm until the Td5. I've had a look at the spring currently on the pedal and it looks very similar to the modified version for the Td5.

Can someone kindly confirm whether the 300Ti would benefit from its standard spring or do I need to buy trousers with a bigger left leg?

Thanks everyone. Very Happy

Andy

Buy a foden recovery truck and use that for a while, the defender pedal will seem like thin air Laughing

On a serious note since I have replaced the slave cylinder and had to bleed it through my pedal is lighter, might be worth bleeding it. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

If you keep having troubles with a heavy clutch you could fit a RedBooster Clutch Servo... Cheers, Vincent

Not much help to you except I can confirm the 300tdi clutch doesn't have to be heavy. My 94 300tdi has a beautifully smooth and light clutch action and as far as I can tell it is all standard. I have recently taken part in an event where I got to drive other defenders and I found some of them terrible In comparison to mine. A few of the other owners commented on my 'girls' clutch pedal because it was so light.
I don't know the reason for this as there are no visible modifications and I have recently swapped both master and slave cylinders due to leaks and this made no difference. All I can say is that I have a very high biting point and then lots of additional travel before the pedal hits the floor. Maybe in this position the mechanical advantage of the pedal is maximised and the assistance from the standard(?) helper spring on the pedal can do its job? The helper spring pulls the pedal to the floor when pushed past a certain point in the pedals travel and there is no fluid in the system to resist the spring.
Perhaps the heavy clutches are due to previous owners fitting heavy duty clutches because 'HD is best right?'. IME the standard clutch is more than up to the job in a Defender provided it isn't abused by bad driving technique.

I changed a couple of 300tdi clutches due to being heavy, as they get nearer to the end of there lives they get heavier.

Hi just found your thread, ive got a 300tdi and my clutch was heavy and hard, so my repair man was trying a different type of clutch from the normal Borg-warner one and as a few have said who have driven mine, say that its like a car one, nice and easy with no effort, but i remember was make it was, can find out if you want to know ? hope it helps you Smile

Changing the clutch in my 300tdi 90 made it significantly lighter, a good excuse to do your rear crank seal if it's leaking also. Like L110CDL I used a Valeo kit.

Yo init,

Rainy weekend so tackled the replacement of the clutch pedal spring. Definitely an improvement - and a quick job using the suggested method elsewhere on the forum. Must of took all of 30 minutes and that included a cuppa builders.

A happy chappy. Thumbs Up
