13 pin trailer electrics

I am having trouble with a trailer plug that is attached to a curly springy cable, it tends to pull the plug sideways giving me intermitantly working side and tail lights on the trailer (obviously this manifested itself when it was dark, making for a fairly stressful journey!).

The socket is a 12 month old Gen LR (Hella) item but the plug is older and a a cheap generic one. I think the plug has worn a bit as it used to be fine.

I could just fit a new, quality plug and replace the crly cable with a normal staright bit. But I woondered whether to fit a more secure 13 pin socket plug but just wire up the 7 pin wires that are already there. However mindful that 13 pin sockets are an MOT test item (I think...), will I come unstuck if I don't wire in the reverse light feed? Anyone know?

If I do this I am looking at Menbers plug/socket as I can't find Hella ones, anyone know if these are of good quality? If not what is?

Replace the plug on the trailer?

It's probably the curly umbilical cable that has caused wear it transit with its pulling motion.

I assume it's a Agri style trailer as these are to make sure the cable doesn't trail low down and get caught.

Is it plastic we're talking for socket and plug?

Yep plastic. I have thought about ally type of plug and socket too. And yes the cable is in that respect better then the normal straight cable.

In fact ally type would be an easier swap especially if Hella do ally type....Googling now!

Hella do make plug and socket in metal. I had only seen Ring which are not quite the quality I wanted!

That may be the way forward. I won't need to use an adaptor for other trailers then!

The reverse feed is right there in the grey plug so it's not difficult to add to the 13pin plug. As is a pemenant live.

The 13 pin socket will fit in your cross member but only if you rotate it so that the flap can open.

I use a Menbers 13pin and am very happy with it. www.td5.org
