2001 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Epsom Green
Constantly Going into limp mode
As much as I love my old 90 I Am totally losing confidence in it at the moment.

At least one in five times I drive it the EML light comes on and I have no throttle control and have to limp it home or get a recovery out. This is extremely frustrating at quite frankly at the moment I could sell my daily car, and the defender and by another big modern 4x4 or perhaps even go Japanese (X5,Touareg, Land Cruiser, Shogun) as I am losing confidence in Land Rover

However I love the defender and really want to keep it. Does anyone know a definitive list of what could be putting the EML light on? I thought I had cured it with a new fuel filter and the water in fuel sensor disconnected. What other things should I check

Regards 2001 Td5 CSW (weekend and snow mobile) Plenty of lights, M/T tyres EGR delete, roofrack, swing away wheel carrier, snorkel.

Ideally you need to plug into a diagnostic machine to read the codes but is sound like a throttle pedal wiring fault, most people use five core wiring to bypass the original loom from the pedal to the ECU, not to big a repair and definitely not something to make you lose confidence as its a easyish one to sort.

To save yourself a whole load of heartache it really needs to have a diagnostic kit plugged in. There might be someone in your area who'd be prepared to meet up and plug theirs in or give a good independant garage a call. Otherwise you could be chasing a simple fault round at great expense plus the time wasted.

If you want to keep it, buy an Nanocom. I bought an old one for very little money as it doesn't want to talk to a laptop naymore but it works in standalone so I can read faults and values.

It cost me less than one visit to a Laro Doctor. Mr. Green Roel

Mine did similar, more and more often, usually on a wet day,
I checked the loom from everywhere I could see it, including using a jet wash on the connectors and wiring, but could not reproduce the fault,
So as a fix / elimination I also required the pedal and bypassed the loom untill it went into the ecu, I used trailer cable,
Since then never missed a beat Thumbs Up

So although I have never found the problem it appears cured
