1989 Defender 90 V8 Petrol CSW Alpine White
My 1989 V8 90 thread
So many years ago I bought a genuine V8 90 with all sorts of off-road gear on it. I made a huge mistake and scrapped the perfectly repairable chassis because I was not fully aware of stuff. But now I have (some) more knowledge and I want to resurrect the car as close to original as I can. I'm hoping you'll all contribute ideas, views and knowledge please.

I sold all the roll cages, winches, lockers and lifted kit.

I don't have oodles of cash, but over time I can manage.

So I have a garage/garden/house full of most bits that have sat here for many years. My plan is roughly:

1 axles
2 engine/box
3 chassis
4 build
5 sell

... Sounds simple. V8 90...WIP

My first plan is to get the axles refurbed. I'm not thinking of doing a great deal of this myself as time is limited.

My first question is: How far to go and what to do? basically they are two very old axles, so do I strip and replace everything, or do I go with a lighter touch? My aim to to bring the vehicle back to like new, not modified... but does subtle upgrades ruin the value or not? For axles, do I galv them? upgrade components? Are lockers completely out? Also does anybody know if discs were standard on an 89 V8 90? V8 90...WIP

Did you keep chassis numbers stamped off old one, or pics of it?

...no chassis ID to keep - one of the reasons for scrapping it at the time was that the front of the chassis had been reinforced and only the first digit was actually visible. V8 90...WIP

Just front solid discs and drums on the rear.

Sounds a great project, keep us posted with photos please! Thumbs Up

However, without matching chassis numbers the lucrative US market will be out and paying someone to do the work will reduce margins furthers. But hopefully you're not doing it just for a profit Thumbs Up

Good luck, taking it back to near original it will be beautiful! Thumbs Up James

Thanks for the brakes info Linds.

I won't be paying people to do most of the work, just some bits like axles etc where my bad back can't deal with too much lugging about and I've not got the space until I can get some bits out the garage and onto a new chassis. I'm not interested in sending it overseas anyway. I say 'sell', but actually I will most likely keep it, but it's an option. V8 90...WIP

I am doing a restoration, and trying to make it as original as possible, although not a V8.

For sure, option 5 is not present in my list, with all the work and hours it has gone in it so far. I am actually tempted to forbid selling even by my inheritors. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Who to send the axles too?
Right- so first job is to get the axles refurbed. Who should I send them too to have a complete overhaul? V8 90...WIP
