A quality read. Read it for the first time about 18 months ago whilst traveling round France... Was tempted to just head East..........
There's a group of students hoping to rerun the route this year (hopefully) http://www.firstoverland.co.uk/ |

I recall from a long time ago watching a film at a Land Rover club evening called Darrion gap where a group of Land Rover people tryed to get across the Amazon i think, all simalar sort of stuff. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Darien Gap. A wilderness break of 250 miles in the projected Pan-American Highway. Never crossed by road vehicles until John Blashford-Snell and some Royal Engineers got a Land Rover 88 and two Range Rovers through.Range Rovers were breaking differentials early on and replacements were flown out from England together with a member from Solihull who was flown out to sort out the problem.Blashers said the hero of the crossing was "the wingless,exhaust-less, windscreenless, crumpled Land Rover, and those who cut for her, winched her, drove her and cherished her.Where they led the big cars could follow."
Blasford-Snell has been involved in a number of interesting journeys. He was chosen to set up Operation Drake. Went on to form Discovery Expeditions. Always enjoyed his books. ![]() Click image to enlarge Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated ![]() 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Nice bit of original footage here:
and more on the issues involved in filming: https://rts.org.uk/article/forgotten-film-forgotten-roads "The wind-up camera could only store enough power for a 30-second shot. The operator had to select from three lenses by guessing the distance, and framing was extremely difficult as there was no viewfinder to show what the lens was seeing." The full film and more is available on DVD for £22: http://www.teeafit.co.uk/firstoverland/ and I believe the link to purchase the book has changed to dot com: http://www.firstoverland.com/ |
