Replacing steering dampner
Going to replace the steering dampner with a new one. Is it just a case of undo the bolt at one end, undo the nut at the other, remove it,replace and then do up the nuts? 1999 Defender TD5 110

for a wandering problem damper would not be my first thing

play in steering box
play in track rod ends
tracking
uneven tyre wear
damper

damper is mainly for wheel wobble

I am only replacing mine because;

1. I have a new one
2. The current one if original has done 183016 miles! 1999 Defender TD5 110

Funnily enough I was considering doing the same, as you say not for specific problem just the fact that it has done 173k.

On all my defenders ive always run 2 steering dampers , 1 in standard place , 1 behind axle

When I removed mine, there was no rebound left in it, I'd compress it and it didn't rise back up. I put a Supagaz one on from Paddocks. 2016 D4 HSE

They shoudnt push out on they own anyway

if you push it half way it should stay there not push out

about the last thing you want is a gas one , because gas one pushes out and will tend to try to push steering arm and make defender pull over one way all the time ( ok only slightly but it does )

If that's the case then why do they make them in the first place and how come I've never read anyone slating them before?

Why would people like Bilstein make and sell them?

if the damper pushes out it will tend to try to turn the steering , making the vehicle pull one way

As said it may be slightly but it does , and personally i think a gas one is a waste of money , after all the gas one ( or any gas damper steering or wheel ) still use oil as the dampenning the gas is only to pressurise the oil to help stop it foaming when they worked hard , something i doubt would ever happen on a defender

Any more details.

Are they both standard LR units?

Is the second one mounted to existing mounting points or are did you make bespoke mountings for them?

Yes both standard ones , 1x all standard in standard place , but because of the angle its at its not really that good

some use the discovery rod thats uses a damper behind axle , but ive always just made my mounts , one end mounted of diff nose and one on steering rod and beause its down in a much straighter line with the rod its a lot more direct acting on the steering
