The way I did mine was to undo at the wiper motor end then pull it out or you might get away with just removing the wiper motor and pulling the spiral runner out still attached to the motor 1999 Defender TD5 110

Pull the worm gear back right from the motor. Unscrew the nut on the motor for the worm gear tube and move the whole tube ( may help if you unbolt and unplug the motor too) which will pull the worm out then replace the wheel boxes and feed the worm gear back through the tubes and re tighten the tube to the motor

Don't know if this one is jammed but I can't get the worm from under the 'hooked' bit on the gear therefore it won't slide in / out.

Have you taken the wiper arm off so it can keep rotating as you pull the worm drive out?

Right so this is a both wheel boxes out job and unwind it job?
You can't just release the middle one when the end one is still attached? |

The wiper spindle and worm wheel cannot be withdrawn from the wheelbox, they're retained by a non-removable ring on the outboard end of the spindle. The wheelbox is renewable as an assembly only. To remove the wheelbox you need to pull the rack (cable) out from the motor end (obviously remove the wiper arms before doing this). |

It's always bugged me that you can't extract the spindle and worm wheel from the wheel box, because there's no need for it to be retained (the back of the box would hold it in position) and it would, if removable, be very simple indeed to lubricate it properly, something which is not at all easy with it fixed.
I have a dim and distant, and possibly incorrect, recollection that on the earliest linked wiper wheelboxes the spindle did slide out the back, but I can't be sure now. |
