Defender Trailer Electric Socket Problem
Hi All

When I plug my trailer in, only the left hand indicator works, and the RH defender tail light fuse blows. Thought it was a bulb problem...however all OK.

Then I disconnected everything from the trailer plug except the LH indicator...the fuse blew again.

So I checked the voltages on the defender socket...these are numbered 1 to 6 anticlockwise from the top, with 7 in the middle.3 is the earth

With the side lights off....all the contacts in the defender socket have no potential...so far so good.

But when the sidelights are turned on, I get 12 volts on 6 (brake) 7 (RH tail) 4 (RH indicator) 2 (fog lights) and 1 (LH indicator). So there seemed to be a lot of contacts live which shouldn't have been.

I cannot see any short at the back of the defender socket (factory fitted , next to tow hitch).

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot

Peter

The trailer socket is quite common for corroding on the inside so you might be best unplugging the whole wiring section under the drivers side rear arch and Unbolting the tow socket, dismantling and checking all the wires. Ray

Thanks Ray. I did unbolt the socket to get at the back. The connections have been set in a solid lump of some sort of silicon sealer and did look sound.

Add a jury earth ( temp earth) then see what happens, most likely cause in my opinion.
Check earth stud / strap on transfer bid if a Puma, clean and refit.
