What oil for LT77 Gearbox? And who from?
Hi Guys,

My gearbox is loosing oil at a rate of about 250ml a month which is starting to get a bit of a pain.

I know ultimately it wont be fixed until I change the gearbox but they are in the hundreds of pounds whereas oil is in the tens of pounds (always been a believer that oil is the cheapest form of engineering)

Anyway, I had traditionally always used ATF dexron 3 in it until while going over the St. Bernard Pass in the Alps fully laden I might have boiled it Embarassed (when we stopped the gearbox was too hot to touch and you could hear the oil popping).

Quick change in a very friendly campsite and a local Independent (who supplied the oil) recommended for Lt77 onwards to use Land Rover Mtf 94. He explained that for normal work Lt77 gearboxes are fine on ATF but if you work them hard it would boil the fluid and so Land Rover worked out a new spec of oil which was MTF94. Having no reason to doubt this I have been topping it up with this however on double checking the spec before ordering another 4 bottles Ashcrofts recommend using ATF.

Clearly Ashcrofts know there gearboxes so should I change back to Atf? or stick with Mtf 94?

It has always been happy on both (until the Atf boiled) and its going to leak ether way so I just wanted to get some opinions really.

And where you get yours from Thumbs Up

Thanks as always!

I use ATF dextron II in LT77s , I found that MTF ruins the gear changes on some. I usually buy it from countrywide farmers believe it or not !

Always used ATF in mine too. 228,000 on the box and still drives well so I've no desire to change it.
