Vintage tractor?
I should know the answer to this but I'm having trouble getting a definitive answer in law or regulation. If I wanted to run a mid 1970s mf135 on normal, white, non rebated fuel what limitations relating to its use on road could I expect, for instance could it be driven to shows or indeed into town to do shopping? I have a fairly good grip on what I can and cannot do when running on rebated fuel in terms of use and distance from base etc etc after much beating of information out of the dvla and vosa. Thanks in advance. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

The only restriction I can see would be what it is registered as. I have 1 35 as a vintage tractor and another as an agricultural tractor which is limited to mileage and use on the public road.

Only other issue could be if ever stopped and a trace of red diesel was picked up, may not be an issue for you if not using red diesel.

Great tractor though, we have a 140 too, similar to the 135. Get a picture or 2 posted.

We have a pair but both are on rebated fuel which precludes me doing much more than farming with them. However I am looking at another to put to being a show pony, as a project for next winter assuming that I can use use it as I want without having to trailer it everywhere. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

There's a thread over here which covers this in quite a bit of details:

No limitations if you are running on white diesel as long as the tractor is roadworthy.

Not that it wouldn't be roadworthy but who is the inspecting authority, or is it another one where I just carry on and only have an issue if I have a collision or get roadsided? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

It is my belief that as it falls within the definition of an agricultural vehicle from the construction point of view, ie it falls within the Authorisation of Special Types Regs not the C&U Regs it is MOT exempt. The responsibility for ensuring roadworthiness is yours, the inspecting authority is VOSA or DVSA or whatever it's called these days.

It is a complex situation (surprisingly so) and if unsure it might be worth seeking out a good traffic law specialist, though this won't be easy.

I faced similar issues with my 1961 mobile crane (which is actually 'engineering plant' under Special Types, and not a mobile crane).

Whatever you do, though, don't run on rebated fuel. You will be collared and the penalties are very severe!

I have been looking at a few but have yet to find one of a suitable starting standard as I don't really have the facility to split one in half. that said Newby hall sounds like a good day out. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

That's gorgeous. Newby was a great day out lots and lots of eye candy even the farm fresh stuff, gives me to wonder if I would be better off investing in a transporter and displaying one of the existing ones as a working machine cos it is painfully obvious that the difference in value between a show pony and a farm fresh will not cover the cost of restoration. Hmm decision making to do. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Makes me sad looking at some of your tractors. SWMBO made me sell my Ferguson TE20 and Allis Chalmers Model B, though to be fair she did let me take delivery of my new 90XS SW a couple of weeks ago so life isn't all bad. I just wish she'd let me look after my own toy cupboard instead of interfering. Further upset yesterday by my best pal arriving and showing off his new toy - Leyland 154
