Pinched wire on ISO harness, now head unit doesn't power up

Hi all,

The world's most un-handy man has struck again.

I pulled the head unit (it is an Alpine CDE-133BT) out to troubleshoot a non-functioning Bluetooth mic. Easy fix, it had popped out of jack). Simple job. The unit was powered on as I was pushing it back in (to ensure that the mic was still working), when it suddenly went dead.

I seem to have pinched the red wire on the unit's ISO adapter harness, and now the head unit doesn't power up. The red wire goes to the ignition; it got caught under the HU and pushed up against the mounting sleeve, like cheese in a grater. The sharp edges of the sleeve ripped off some of the insulation and exposed bare copper. The wire wasn't cut all the way through, but enough I think to touch the copper to the mounting sleeve.

No fuses have been blown, neither at the fusebox or on the HU. The Land Rover factory loom still gets power, tested on an old radio and it powered up. Tried using a multimeter, but the probes are too big to fit into the Alpine ISO box terminals.

Not sure if I've killed the HU or if a replacement harness will sort this.

Can any of you auto stereo gurus comment?

There may be an internal fuse to the head unit power board. Try using paperclips perhaps instead of the multimeter probes to determine if you still have power at the ISO connector. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

are both the permanent live and ignition live ok

Hi - they appear to be, in that I was able to get a different HU to power up fine. The only difference (aside from the HU itself) is that I wasn't using the ISO adapter for the Alpine; I just plugged into the factory LR loom.

I tried the multimeter with the red wire's bullet connector and got some crazy reading, in the 40s, was expecting around 12v?

Ah well, truly shorted it. Had a word with Alpine and there is an internal fuse, soldered on the board.

Simple enough fix (for them), so off it goes to the repair guy. Cheaper than buying a new one.
