Although the rear hub flanges wear quite a bit on the Puma, it could also be worn rear radius arm bushes that give you a clunk as you go from reverse to forward.
If they've never been done, I'd say this would be prime suspect. Both ends, axle and chassis ![]() |

I've got the same, makes the clunk when changing direction between forward and reverse. More loud when reversing though.
Sort of a 'goink!' when just starting the reversing, but more of a 'cronk' when going forward again ![]() I just got a full set of bushes that I'm slowly replacing. I'll update this thread when/if I find the culprit. I'm hoping it's not the A-frame joint. Swapping out CV's, halfshafts and flanges recently made a heap of difference in terms of noise, but now the new set up just makes me aware of how much slack there is upsteam which is more felt than heard. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

Is the A-frame joint a bigger issue? |

A frame ball joint.
Easy to change if you buy the joint in the fulcrum. More expensive but can be done in about half an hour then. Jack chassis up, un bolt sway bar and shocks. Unbolt fulcrum. Fit is reverse. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html Instagram - @r22oyp Roy |

Pickles, don't know the exact difference between a goink and a cronk, but before your warranty runs out, ask your dealer to check if your halfshafts possibly have excessive play. I had for years some kind of a transmission clunk, or goink, or cronk,
![]() I guess the way to check is on a chassis supporting lift when rear wheels can be turned freely to check eventual slack in the half shafts. Dealer should be able to do that easily with you present, so you can witness for yourself if there potentially would be quite a bit of slack or not. My experience is in below thread. Bonne chance. ![]() Eric http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic27466-15.html You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Can't be sure my goink is the same as pickle's but after changing out the halfshafts, flanges, CVs and more the noise continues on mine. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Mines a "thud"changing some gears. Fairly convinced I need to order the Ashcroft shaft.
Think I might prefer a goink. |
