Transferbox?
Hi - finally found a great 90 200 tdi. It has done 100.000 miles and runs great. But it feels like the gearing is very low. It pulls like a train from 30 - 55, but it hits the wall at 70 mph, not sure about the revs, apart from very high Shocked
Is it possible that the transferbox is very low geared?
And another thing - how do you tell if it has been tweaked? It sure feels like it pulls more than my Puma, but I read something about overdoing it and engine temp.. The temp gauge stands just before 12 o´clock when doing 50 - but doing 65 - 70 and the needle goes on to just about one o´clock…not near the red - but still over the top...

I have changed the transfer box on my 200 to a disco 1-1.22 box, much better, will cruise at 80 and returns high 30s mpg wise.

The factory temp gauge is always a bit hit or miss, they will climb up under hard acceleration and on steep hills, as it is reading directly from the sender, the gauge is not 'given' a reading from and ECM Td5/puma style if you see what I mean.

That said if you want to have a tinker, have a good look at the radiator as the fins corrode out badly after a while, and check the thermostat as they have a habit of being changed for the wrong type. Infact, last time I ordered a genuine LR one that was wrong as well !!!!

Thank you. I will check the radiator tomorrow - and keep in mind what you said about the gauge.
I have been thinking a lot about the 1.22 transfer box - but will it do ok with 295/75r16?

Couldn't tell you with 295s, mine is on 265/75 16s and pulls them (and often a 3.5t 16 foot trailer) no probs whatsoever.

If it has been tweaked you probably need to worry more about Exhaust Gas Temperature EGT rather than the engine temp. Upping the fuel and boost will cause the exhaust gas to get hotter and can lead to damage to the valves, this is why it is advisable to fit a bigger intercooler when tuning a diesel.

You can buy a thermal probe and gauge to measure your EGT if you really think it has been played with.

Another quick visual check to see if she's been played with:

Remove the air/fuel ratio diaphragm and cam. Mark the position of the diaphragm to the pump body first, then remove and look at the ratio pin wear marks on the cam. The VE pumps tend to be 'tweaked' by increasing the AFR and making the spring lighter so if someone has been playing you'll see at least two wear lines on the accentuated cam. If you need me to do a bit of a how to give me a shout and I'll take some pics of a pump I've got in build in the garage.

I will check - there was a link in another post on how to tweak, with pictures, and a larger intercooler is one of the things on my wish list, as well as the 1.22 transfer box.. and new doors etc….
Thanks a lot for answers……
