Is it normal...
..OK, so (as you read in another thread) I've just got my new (4 month old) 110 USW.

Quick stupid question.

On starting up, there is a brief 'clunk' type sound from near the steering column. Goes immediately, but does it every time on startup.

Is this normal?

Cheers,

James

P.S. Just did my first mods to the truck (what do you mean it took me three days of ownership?).

Mud Rails - Best invention ever...

Plus Kenwood KIV-700 head unit. Much much better sound. Now to replace those horrible front speakers...

they all do it - i think its something to do with the abs pressurising its self.

i also have the mud rails - its amazing how much they make driving alot more comfortable, i asl have the kiv-700 with the blue tooth added and usb splitter - one for the memory stick and the other for the iphone, mounted on the dash - handy for the sat nav.

Thanks Nick.

Thought it must be normal. but you never know with a Defender... Smile

Yes, the mud rails are great. Ironically, I didn't move my seat a lot further back, despite being 6'2, but the raised driving position just seems to make everything a little more 'ergonomic'...

Am replacing the grab handles with these:

which should get rid of the handles digging in my thigh problem.

Good idea with the USB splitter on the KIv-700. At the moment I have the lead trailing to my cubby box.

I bought the add-on BT box, too. where did you mount yours?

i like the look of the handles, you do seem to get an indentation in your leg

the bt box i've located behind the flap in the dash board in the n/s footwell

i have found on a couple of times, that the plug for the bt box comes loose frome the back of the head unit (only slightly) but enough to sopt it working. we've got quite a bumpy track to our house. i've got to try and fix it more permantly. I'm also on the look out for a dab box for it.

Hi Nick,

Just to let you know (in case you didn't) that there is a recent firmware and software update for the KIV-700 on the Kenwood website.

http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/receiver/firmware/2010/ord_eng.html

Just download onto a USB stick and follow the instructions. Supoosedly adds a few improvements.

Can also recommend the Pure highway as a low-cost DAB solution. Used to work really well in my Golf.

My aim is to use the aux in on the KIV-700 to connect directly to the aux-out on the Highway (thus avoiding the FM transmitter), with the stick-on glass aerial mounted on the alpine window (I have privacy glass so you can;t really see in to the alpine window anyway). The Pure unit iself can either sit in the cubby box or on dash shelf (IN only tend to use it for Planet Rock and Radio 4 anyway).

Thanks for the nod on the firmware update.

I didn't realise you could connect the pure high way in this way - i'll take another look at this then. So the highway unit could actually be fitted into the cubby box as tis got an external antenna, as its not the best looking unit.
