What colour was the oil before you degreased it?
From that area I would most likely suspect its rear main oil seal on back of the engine block. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter ![]() |

Today's update after a short drive:
![]() Click image to enlarge Looks a lot like a gasket/seal to me-note fresh oil around the gearbox/engine seam compared with photo yesterday. How bad is this?!! |

If you're local to Alder Hills whip it in here and get an expert opinion. Cost you nowt but a little time perhaps.

![]() I wish.....when referring to 'here' I meant the link, not the fact it belongs to me. Not mine, but one I have visited. Turn in by the Macdonalds onto the industrial estate, first right, then left, it's the last unit on the right hand side. ![]() Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Ha! I thought it was a brave business move, but now that makes more sense. I'll try them. Thanks for the link.

Apparently it's Clutch Slave Cylinder. Gearbox out job is what I've been told. Ouch! 😳

While the box is out, get them to inspect and lubricate the gearbox output adaptor shaft splines. You'll probably also want to consider a new driven plate (even if the old one isn't contaminated with fluid) since they have a very limited life before the springs take on a permanent set.

The garage has suggested a new clutch whilst the box is out. I didnt realise the slave cylinder was such a big job! Got to be done though...

Can be done at home with the right time, a little help and tooling.....
Be interested to know how much he has quoted as a guideline. There is also AL Services in Poole. You could give them a call for a quote perhaps and see who comes out on top? ![]() I don't own or work at this one either...... ![]() ![]() http://www.alservices.co.uk/about/ If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! It isn't a big job, it just requires removing the gearbox! I suppose it depends how you define "big" though! |

Gearbox and engine oil smell very different so get some engine oil from your engine and compare. Viscositywise is hard to tell. Puma 110" SW
