Diesel leak on injector rail
Hi all,

I have a small diesel leak from the back of the injector rail.

Seems to be coming from the banjo that screws into the end, but I've checked the tightness of everything, banjo was slightly loose but have tightened that up and still leaks. Any suggestions, as I don't want to take it to bits and end up immobile. The little plastic connector jobby is a bit loose, but not sure how that attaches.

The black pipe is just a push fit connector. The banjo (fuel metering valve) has a copper washer inside the rail which I have seen leak on a few now, usually as a result of the meteringvalve being changed and not tightened enough Thumbs Up

Still having this problem. I have removed the said components, cleaned, and refitted tight with some PTFE tape to help seal things up, but there is still a small leak from somewhere resulting in a small puddle of diesel below it on the manifold, and I think it is also leaking onto the electrical connector below it too for whatever sensor that is, which can't be good.

Anyone have any advice on this? I'm not convinced on how secure the plastic push on connector is too, are they usually a little bit loose (ie able to turn around it's plug when connected)? Pete

how much does it leak ?

when its running there is 20,000 psi in the rail , any leak should show up pretty quick if its dryed off first

As munch has said with that amount of pressure ptfe won't do much to seal it! I would put a new washer in personally Thumbs Up

I don't think there's much, just a small drip every now and then, you can't see anything leaking whilst shes idling.

I'll try and get hold of a new washer as I didn't have one of the right size. Thumbs Up Pete

Not sure it's a leak on mine but did notice the rear of the fuel rail appears to have an area that looks "wetter":

You could be right but it's just the inconsistency with the uniform color across the rest of the rail.

Leave it dry and keep a eye on it , or spray it with anti corrosion

If you look at the photo you posted the leak appears to be around the limiting valve (pressure relief valve) and the fuel line spigot and low pressure return line (black banjo). You only get the equivalent of the rail pressure to about half way up the limiting valve (the silver hexagonal bit with the black push fit union attached), after that there is no fuel pressure unless the limiting valve has activated. There will be a little fuel in the low pressure return pipe from the leak off from the injectors that may be leaking through the banjo as there is a rubber O ring in the banjo which clips over the fuel return spigot screwed into the end of the limiting valve.
When you removed the limiting valve did you tighten as per the workshop torque settings?

1. On fitting the relief valve initially tighten to 22 ft lb's
2. Draw on the limiting valve a line which carries over onto the fuel rail.
3. Mark another line clockwise from the first line on the fuel rail at a distance of 3mm
4. Now tighten the limiting valve to 127 ft lb's
5. The original line on the limiting valve should now have passed the second line you drew on at 3mm on the fuel rail.
6. If it has not passed the line take the limiting valve off and inspect for thread damage/contamination and retry.

Hi,

I recently bought a 2009 Defender 90 2.4l puma with 100k on the clock and very quickly found out that it is leaking fuel. Having done much investigation and online research I've come across this forum thread, which seems to be talking about exactly the issue I'm facing.

I just wondered if anyone could give me their advice on a couple of things?

1) Is it unlikely that the injector rail needs replacing?
2) Is it most likely that just the PRV needs replacing or is it a good idea to replace the return line banjo at the same time?
3) Is this a job that can be undertaken by a very inexperienced individual (me) or do you need to re-pressurise the fuel system, drain fuel or re-prime the fuel etc etc?

Thanks in advance for your help.
