Speed and EGT
Hi There, I am new to this forum so be be gentle with me.....

Regarding long extended trips in the Puma has any one been able to measure EGT? We often do trips of 600Km at a time, with the Defender loaded to the rafters and sitting at maximun speed of 140KM/H for a couple of hours.

I will be fitting a larger intercooler soon as well reprogrming the chip.

Cheers,
Eric

Loaded to the rafters you shouldn't really be doing 140kmh Whistle

Doing 120kmh loaded, my EGT sits around 500-550C, long uphill and it climbs to 597C. Not sure if it has gone over 600C yet.

Be careful, these will invalidate your warranty if yours is still under the original LR warranty!

Hi naks,

Thanks for the info; yes when loading we try and keep the COG as low as possible, no roofracks!

Regarding the Intercooler and chip tune, Land rover will invalidate the warranty, but interestingly this mod was recomended by one of the sales guys at a Land rover dealership(not going to say which one) and the recomendation is to use Elton from superchips.

I would NOT listen to anything stealers have to say - these monkeys don't know the first thing about landys. Someone recently met a stealer workshop manager who claimed that the Defender's drivetrain is 60/40 4WD Shocked

So, the stealer tells you it's ok. Then six months down the line your turbo blows because of an oil hose that a stealer mechanic did not tighten properly after a service. I guess you see where this is going?

How much you want to bet that same poephole will turn around and tell you because you put a non-LR intercooler and remapped your Puma, that your warranty is void and you will have to fork out R15K for a new turbo?

Also, I think he meant Elton from Turbochip: http://www.turbochip.co.za/ Thumbs Up

Remaps, chipping etc WILL invalidate your warranty - LR wrote to all dealers to inform them of this.

As for intercoolers, im not so sure actually - either way, just get the dealer to put it in writing Thumbs Up Mike

Hi all!

How are you measuring the EGT? Do you have some specific instrument for it? Or do you take some signal of some sensor on exaust?

Because I only know that this instrument is used in airplanes! But is an important data for cars too.

regards!

Gabriel, I have the Madman EMS2 system fitted. Many Defender owners in SA fit this unit, since it is manufactured locally by a landy expert (www.landyonline.co.za).

BUT, you can also do this with a temperature probe and simple LED display, quite cheaply actually. The EMS system was designed for Defenders, and monitors EGT, Oil Pressure, Coolant level, Coolant Temperature and also transfer box oil temperature.
