Do I have to change my engine
First, sorry for my bad language....
I have an issue, It's a power loss which persists (my Defender TD4 is a MY 2007 with 200000 km on the clock). I have trouble pulling the 6th to the max. Before, it reached easily 132 km/h and then regulate electronically. Now, I succeed painfully (after launching 2km on the flat, windless) to reach 130 km/h,
It remains an unsolved issue.
Meanwhile, I
- Changed my glow plugs
- Makes a slagging pushed of the intake pipe
- Changed my turbo (a little worn)
- Replaced my genuine hoses by silicone hoses
- Removed the catalytic converter
- Cleaned my intercooler
- Removed the EGR valve
- Replaced the MAF and MAP sensors
- Controlled bench my injectors. OK
- Swapped my valve VCV and my injectors (with another Def who had 30000 km on the clock). No result.
- Checked 2 times my cylinder compressions (21 bars on all 4 cyl). Always OK
Only one result, after scouring the intake pipe and changing the turbo, is a little gain of power. Before, it was maxing 120km/h and now, it hardly gets to reach 130 km/h.
And of course, no smoke, no oil consumption, no light, no DTCs with the diagnosis suitcase.
What is left for me to explore: fuel circuit? ECU? common-rail? reprogramming? ....
The last thing that has been done is the passage on a dyno and here is the result. LR said, "the engine is worn, it must be replaced" What do you think about?

Better going to the 'specialists' rather than the multitude of 'supposition' that may follow. Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I don't know what the official compression figures are for a puma but 21 bar sounds ok. You say the egr has been removed, as others have said I'd consult one of the experts on the puma to see if they have any ideas about it. When the Egr was removed did it have a custom map from somebody loaded ?

I would be very surprised if the Puma was worn to the extent of power loss at 200,000 K. If the injectors and turbo are also good id be thinking poor mapping, leaking boost pipes or maybe a carbon choked intake tract.

Just a thought but if its now reaching 130 km/h that's 81.25 mph. My limiter kicks in at 82 ish, its not just easing back because it's hitting the speed limiter is it ?

I notice you say its now doing 2 km h less than it would before, to me that's negligible and might not signify any problem at all.

Silly question, but as it`s only lost a few km,s ( if I`am reading this right).
Have you changed any drive line components or wheels / tyres. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

fuel and air filter. OK done
but the graphs look about right? Power graph seems OK, not torque graph very low

When the Egr was removed did it have a custom map from somebody loaded ? Egr was blanked and "something" changed in the mapping
I would be very surprised if the Puma was worn to the extent of power loss at 200,000 K. If the injectors and turbo are also good id be thinking poor mapping, ....or maybe a carbon choked intake tract. The air intake manifold was carbon choked, but was cleaned, not the engine cylinder head:could it be it?

Hi,
I will checked for an intercooler leak but....
My local indy, who mainly maintains Defenders and made all the checks, told me that my engine is fine but he does not understand why this power loss. He talked to my maindealer Land Rover who answered that the engine is tired and the only solution is to change it ( a lot of £ !!!)
In my view, there are no obvious signs (compression, smoke, oil consumption ..) showing a too tired engine.
So, next week, I'll go to my maindealer LR for a standard ECU remaping . I'll see if it brings a change.
Regards
Gerard
