It's often the case with things like this that as long as you buy decent branded bearings, the tolerances they are made to will be smaller than that of the shims you are using to set the preload. In other words the shims are there to account for the variations in the machining of the hub, so if you replace the bearings and use decent ones the chances are that you will need the same shim again to achieve the correct preload. I still prefer the old system because you can't have the situation crop up where you did need a different shim for whatever reason and then be stuck for parts, but generally the shim is set by the machined component and that's that.

It's the same for LT230 input gears, the procedure for installation is to fit it with the smallest shim in place and then measure the end float, at which point you add the preload and choose the correct shim from the list available. I replaced one a while back with new bearings and the shim I needed turned out to be the one that came out with the old gear/bearings.
