Occasional Non-starting Issue
Hi,

I'm a new TD5 Owner of about 2 weeks. I have a 2001 TD5 with 72K miles on it. After 2 weeks of trouble free-use, a new problem has started happening. The engine simply refuses to even try to turn over. Of note, this has happened with both a warm and cold engine. When it happens, there is no glow-plug and engine light at key position 2 and there is no fuel pump buzz. The other symptom is that the temp gauge sits in the red zone (regardless of actual engine temperature). So far, it have started after sitting for a few minutes.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I don't think I have an immobiliser; there is no central locking. It is a fairly basic model.

Same thing with mine.

I had the contacts replaced on the starter solenoid first. As mine would simply either make a clicking sound and not turnover, or no glow plug light, temp gauge in red, and crank all day and not fire. Diagnosed by others on here, more knowledgeable than me as either starter solenoid contacts or starter relay.

Still had problems, so checked and found oil in injector loom at ECU. Clean with contact cleaner and Robert's your mothers brother!

New injector loom purchased and will be fitted when I am back in sunny Scotland in December.

Cheers, that gives me a start point. I'll be fitting the additional earth to the ECU as described in the other posts, too. We;ll see if that helps.

Also, if the impact cut-out switch is activated this causes the same symptoms... fuel pump stops and the guage goes up to red.

It's the black rubber button thing you see screwed to the middle of the bulkhead if you open the bonnet.

If your battery is getting okd the fuelpump relay may not be cutting in while cranking.
It's a common fault.
Hold your finger on the relay while cranking to check for vibration.

Right,

the wife has just been stranded for the 2nd time in two days. I need to get this fixed. The two times it has happened with me there, there was no turning over of the engine. Just completely dead. Both times it has happened to the wife, it was turning over but not catching.

This time, it took half an hour before it started. I got her to press the fuel cut-off switch. Five minutes later, it just decided to start.

Just to check, I can find any reference to the ECU in the Haynes manual. Is this the same thing as the ECM, under the driver's chair?

Yep, big rectangular silver box under drivers seat.

Pull the red plug and have a look for oil. If there is oil present then the loom has gone.
As a temporary fix clean as much oil out as possible using switch cleaner and paper towel and see if it helps.

If it is this and you replace the loom (about £40) you will need to repeat the cleaning process until all the oil has made it's way down the part of the loom you don't replace.

Next time it does it.

Leave the key in the ignition on postion (temp gauge should be maxed out)

Lift the drivers seat.

Now standing to the side and lookng into the car there are some Yellow relays in the far left corner.

Starting from the furthest out carefully squeeze the top and bottom of the realy together (pushdown on the top while squzzing the connector underneath upwards) it's a tight spot to get you hand in.

If when your doing this the temp gauge flys back down and you get the Yellow ECU light and coils you have a poor connection on that relay.

Right,

I've fitted an additional earth strap between the ECU case and the body. I couldn't get it to play up (typical) so I couldn't check the relays. There are only two, in my model (no A/C) and I'll brief up the wife on what to do. I couldn't see any oil, although a previous owner has covered the ECU and one of the relays in latex or somesuch. I'll have a better look in the daylight.

Check the earth header blocks or broken/chaffed wire over the gearbox possibly.

I would start by removing the relays under the drivers seat one by one and checking the connectors in the terminal blocks and the legs of the relays for any signs of corrosion or poor connection. .

I had another failure last night. It did its usual, started up, drove about 5 metres then cut out. Started up after a few minutes and after I jiggled the ECU. Not sure if that is significant. I"ll go through the other suggestions in the coming days. Cheers.
