R380 gearbox
My gearbox went kaput on Monday....

Output shaft is stripped.

So I have the choice of two boxes, one is a Britpart box, and the other is an Ashcroft box.

there is a £100 price difference and about a weeks difference in delivery, Britpart being more expensive but faster, while Ashcroft will be cheaper but delivered in around 10 days time.

Any advice?

Gut feel says to go with the Ashcroft box based on nothing more than the fact that I have heard only good things about Ashcroft.

Thoughts?

PS I have no internet at home just now, so will be tomorrow before I get a chance to check posts (I'm not being rude, well not any more than usual Wink )

I have a well known local garage on the case (who I trust), and they have pretty much said that the Britpart box could well be a LR recon unit.

I'd ask what the Britpart box is. Could it even come from Ashcrofts?

If me I'd be buying a box from main dealer or low milage crashed vehicle, I've had many things from Ashcrofts, and none of them have lasted. Synchro gearboxes have good reviews.

Thanks for the advice folks.

Have asked my garage to confirm if the Britpart is a LR or Ashcroft reconditioned box, if either I'll take it on the basis of speed and I need the truck on the road again.

Will let you know what I find out over the next few days.

Hi Andy,

The Britpart one won't be either LR or ours, whoever you buy from one of the important things you should ask is what bearings they have used, especially the rear support bearings ie FTC3371 and FTC2385, these are a common problem on the 380, genuine were RHP, there are 2 other brands available, don't use either, they don't last more than 3-4 months, even the RHP's can struggle to last 12 months when worked hard, that's why we machine the casing and fit larger ones as an optional upgrade, the RHP's are not that easy to find, we bought all available stock about 18 months ago when RHP stopped making them, it's a specific LR design and they will not make them for anyone else. I have about 6 months stock left of RHP's but have another quality manufacturer making them for me,

We are working hard to get our lead times down, currently 6 working days which in this business is a long time !

I've just spoken to the Garage and they indeed can confirm it was not a Ashcroft or LR G/box being offered via Britpart so they bailed on that and ordered direct from Ashcroft (inline with my request)!!!!

So A+ for the garage, and A+ for the forum Wink

The latest....

* New reconditioned Gearbox fitted (from Ashcroft).
* New Clutch fitted;
* New Clutch oil;
* New Gearbox Oil;
* New transfer box input gear (old one damaged due to gearbox output shaft spline rounding off);
* Transfer box was flushed, new bearings fitted to the new input gear;

Worth noting that the input gear forging for the transfer box is modified in that it has some drillings to allow gear oil into the gearbox output spline to help avoid damage in the future.

Anyway I have driven the truck now and put on about 100 miles or so, and in my opinion its is brilliant, the box is much tighter and much more composed. only niggly thing is its tricky changing up from 2nd to 3rd and on occasion you need to abandon 3rd and go back to 2nd before re-attempting 3rd. Although i'm pretty confident that that will bed down after a 1000miles or so, once things bed in.

The vendors I used:-
Caldwell and Dempster in Banchory;
Ashcroft;

When I had to replace the LT77 in my NAS D90, I air freighted in an R380 from Ashcroft.

They are excellent to deal with, and their products are as good as it gets. There were other re-built R380s available here in Canada, but I followed good advice and went with the one from Ashcroft.

I too can't speak highly enough of Ashcrofts.
Great to deal with,issues dealt with very quickly and efficiently.
I've had a pair of their air lockers in my challenge truck for thelast 3 years.Brilliant piece of kit.

Ashcrofts all the way, I bought one for my project 90 great service great quality, can’t fault the gearbox or the company. As they say buy right buy once.

Just had the box replaced but find when cold, neutral to 1st can be a bit notchy/tight. I am going to run it with the oil in it now and then drop and replace with genuine LR MTF 94 rather than Car Lube MTF 94

How's your box? 1999 Defender TD5 110

My impression is that the R380 does tend to be quirky and can be a complete s*d when cold. My Disco2 has always been very difficult from 1 to 2 when cold, "notchy" and requiring a very fast change, whereas when hot it is just like the other moves and laid back and easy is the way to go.

It is something I have just learned to live with, and I don't think it is symptomatic of any underlying problem (it hasn't changed for better or for worse in over 200,000 miles).

If you find a different lubricant makes a significant difference it would be interesting to try.
