Gearbox or transfer case noise?
I have an noise under load which is more noticable in 5th gear.
Here is a video clip of the noise

&f

This is done in 5th, transfer case in neutral.

I am sure I can hear the noise all the gears but moreso in 5th.
While in 5th gear I got under the car and the noise sounded more towards the rear of the gearbox.
I did find some play in the front output on the transfer case.
Oil on gearbox OK and replaced about 2 months ago
Oil on transfer case due for renewal but levels checked and I did put a quick squirt of oil in.

Thoughts please. 110 has done 178500 miles. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Hi John

Did you get anywhere with this ?

My TD5 has developed a nasty knocking from the transmission area under load. It is fine in low range which seems a bit strange.

I am sure mine is something to do with the x-brake I have just fitted. There is a post on here where somebody thought their DMF had gone but it was the handbrake cable supplied with the x-brake that caused it. I have just ordered a genuine LR cable and hopefully that will sort it. If not, I think I have an expensive job coming up Big Cry

Hi. Didnt get anywhere with this, other than ordered a disco transfer case.
Deep down, I think its the R380 box and the 5th gear going Sad I hope not after seeing the price of a box and fitting from Ashcrofts.

At idle I can hear a noise that appears to be coming from the back of the box, like a bearing going.

I don't have an x-brake to worry about just yet.

£££££ are ringing in my ear! Sad 1999 Defender TD5 110
