factory soundproofing?
Been going through the parts manuals on trim and, unless I'm missing something, the only difference between my 2010 base station wagon (rubber front floor/seat base mats plus the ultra thin rear mat on the tub floor) and the all-singing-last-of-the-line Defenders was that they - like all County spec-and-higher Defenders - had carpets in the front and full carpets in the rear (including the wheelboxes, whereas my wheelbases are bare painted aluminium).

Am I missing something, or is there another layer of dampening/foam somewhere on the later/higher-spec models that I'm not considering? I do have headlining/side trims of course, but there's nothing really behind them.

As an owner of a base spec 110, I also don't' think you're missing anything.

But, I wouldn't be surprised if the carpets fitted to the 'nicer' models, are foam backed to some extent, so almost 2 layers in one. I'll check this next time I see my mate who has a very nice high spec late 90.

When i first got mine, and noticed how much louder mine was than his, I thought that there must be more to it and a significant difference in bulkhead deadening. I've not had them apart yet, but from what you can see through the speaker holes in the dash, i was surprised to say that they looked identical in this respect.

I've bought a load of sound deadening for mine (stick on dodo matting and 6mm acoustic foam), and will do what I can to keep the noise down, but while keeping as much of the exposed paintwork as I can. I think it looks great inside, so I'm hoping that doors, bulkhead, roof, bonnet and under floor mats will get it quiet enough for me. I may eventually give in and fit carpets, but I'm trying not to.

There is some extra foam between the tub and the side panels.

Bulkhead wise, there is no additional sound proofing, but keep in mind that the 2.2 is a bit quieter (probably the dpf muffles it a bit more). 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I bought genuine LR carpets for the front of my 90 and I can confirm they are foam backed

I’ve always thought the base spec Puma with the one piece rubber floor / tunnel mat and seatbox mat is actually quieter than the county / Xs spec with carpets.

My 2014XS was supplied new with just a moulded vinyl matting over the seat box and lower bulkhead (and head-liner). Not even footwell mats.
It is massively quieter with full sound proofing and carpet. Cheers, Guy.

The Heritage models didn't have carpet, just lots of shiny metal to cause reverb...

Thanks everyone.

I'd always assumed that the fancy models had some rudimentary additional soundproofing - what with the premium stereos and leather.

I'm currently replacing the fotwell/seatbox rubber mats in mine with the Wright Off Road acoustic mat set I bought last year. I'm also fitting rubber mats in the back and over the wheelarches.

In the future, I'll properly soundproof it with butyl mat and additional foam, but for now it looks like the simple changes I'm making will instantly make it better soundproofed than a high spec 2015 model (not expecting much, just nice to know I haven't left a Genuine LR part on the table).

I think the XS models gained the plastic trays under each side of the seat box, although it's debatable whether they do anything.

The XS USW's didn't even get carpet Rolling Eyes Darren

Neither did a 110 XS 7 seat SW get carpets as standard in 2015.
Mine were a selected option. Other than the footwell mats, the carpet on the seat box and wheel arches is very thin, probably has next to no effect as sound deadening.
