I never got any further with this topic yet as I decided to enquire about doing a welding evening course at my local college... Turns out I have to wait until September 2015 for the next course to start!

But they've just emailled me and asked what course I would like to do... MIG or TIG...

What would be better (or more useful I should say) to the non-professional type such as myself!?

My gut says that MIG would be easier to learn, but TIG is a better discipline to learn?!?

MIG or stick (MMA). I wouldn't bother with TIG unless you have a particular need for it.
Done well TIG can do a really neat job, but it's easier to do a good/adequate job with MIG or stick.

It's also a lot easier to do a decent job with a decent welder.
