What All Terrain tyre in 255/85r16?
Hi, I was just looking around for new tyres to go on my Wolf wheels and noticed the BFG AT's don't come in 255/85r16, so I am looking for suggestions as to which tyre would be a good alternative in this size.

Given that I will be driving 80% onroad and 20% offroad (being dirt tracks and rock covered roads, no deep muddy tracks), and value low noise levels and ride comfort over offroad capabilities, what tyre would be a good choice in 255/85r16?

Good choice of tyre. I'm about to bin my Coopers for less noise for the same tyre......

265/75/16 and it opens up a large choice of tyres including BF Goodrich T/A KO All Terrain? Why not play with the size a little and you can get the tyre you wish for?

That's a good question, I see I didn't explain my reasoning.

Well, I would like 255/85r16 for two reasons:

1) 255/85 is higher than 265/75, raising the vehicle by about 18mm
2) In some countries, fitting 265 on a 6,5J rim is not allowed

For me, #1 is the most important aspect (it gives me some extra clearance for my camper unit), but #2 is a nice bonus when travelling. Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Think you may struggle unless you go for MTs that will significantly increase noise. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Cuurently only 2 options i can find, BFG MT's and I think Maxxis make the other MT.

Coopers used to do an aggressive AT but they seem to have dried up. If BFG did an AT i'd be ordering enough for 3 Land Rovers and 2 Sankeys. Still waiting Big Cry He who dies with the most toys...wins!

Yea Coopers used do the ST in 255/85 but has been superseeded by the STMax but sadly not in 255s Sad

The new style Bfg Muds are much quieter on the road than the older ones. And look the business on wolf rims

You can get 255 / 85 BFG ATs, but they are rare. I saw a 110 with them on at Billing, and asked him about them. He said you can get them in the UK from a company (can't remember who, sorry!) I am not sure about Netherlands though. They will be expensive either way! 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

I run 255/85/16 KM2s to be honest the road noise is there not that bad really might be masked by the roof rack wind noise

They do affect gearing as well on the 2.2 gearing Thumbs Up

I also run 255/85 KM2 MTs and find them very quiet, certainly in the same league as the General Grabber road tyres that I used to run.

Grip in the wet is another matter..Smile

Cheers

Hmm, although the muds do look much beefier, I am a bit anxious for their grip on wet tarmac (and the increased road noise).

But: I like beefier Laughing

And after having heard my local shop charges EUR 100,- per wheel (ex VAT) to refurb my Wolf wheels (WTF!?), and seeing tyre options in 255/85r16 are very limited, I figure I might as well get some black modulars in 7J (or 7,5 or even 8???) and go for BFG AT's in 285/75r16.

Sure, I could do-up the Wolfs myself, but that would still leave me with the limited tyre selection, so I guess 285/75r16 it will be (...whenever the required funds arrive) Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Here is a pic of BFG Muds 285s on an 8" Mod rim - Over all size now is around 32" in height as they are a tad worn.
