Using a spare wheel that is of a smaller circumference: bad?
Would it be a problem for the car to be running on a spare wheel that is quite smaller than the other 3 wheels for maybe 200 KM or so?

The reason I ask is that I am considering the spare wheel's location on my camper, and I think the roof would be the best place in my particular case. Now, I don't want to discuss the obvious drawbacks like center of gravity, getting the wheel up there (and down again!), but would simply like to know if it would harm the car / diffs to be running a 30 or 31 size spare tyre when the others are 33.

Any thoughts?

Whilst diffs are designed so that two tyres of the same size can cope with different rotation rates, i.e when turning corners etc I doubt very much that they are designed to handle a continuous 10% difference.

Let alone the handling problems due to suspension being uneven etc.

Am guessing is that it will also be illegal to have mixed tyre sizes on same axle.

So simple answer is don't do it

On second thought, of course I could get a narrower spare wheel that is pretty much of the same circumference, like in the picture below (but then mounted on the roof). Should work, right, and still be considerably lighter (weight wise) than the regular wide tyres.

that's what I do, tyres fitted are 265's, my spare is a Michelin XZL 7.50 x 16 which is the same diameter - in essence a space saver.
