Third'ed
![]() Original paper far better, filters better, much cheaper and just as free flowing. Unless you are driving in constant dusty conditions, K+N will be an expensive gimmick .. ![]() |

If I needed to drive in constant dusty conditions I for sure wouldn't want anything else than a paper filter.
They don't cost world. Just change them more often if needed. It's a two minute job instead of the time consuming cleaning, drying, spraying ritual of K&N type filters. |

Does different brands of paper filter matter? Our dealers here like to stock MANN

Why do you want an air filter at all? I think manufacturers put them on engines to ensure abrasive dust doesn't get into your engine and damage it or wear it out prematurely. So if you can hold a filter up to the light and see light through it then dust particles aren't getting filtered out. I would rather suffer a small performance penalty over needing a new engine. Your choice but every 'performance' filter I've seen allows a lot of light through. Cheers, Guy.

Okay - I should qualify what I said above...
The only foam filter I trust is from ITG. I have been on a lot (!) of forums and talked to various manufacturers about this. It doesn't increase engine performance, nor does ITG claim this (only that performance doesn't drop as much when the filter gets dirty). It also has to be cleaned every 50,000 km and retreated with filter "oil" (e.g. Motul). This is tricky to do properly. However, unlike K&N filters, the oil is "gooey" (it only contains thinners when it's sprayed on) and doesn't move around. I bought some K&N oil to experiment - it's like gun oil and I wouldn't let it near my engine ![]() Negatively, the ITG filters are expensive. So if you're looking for initial high performance, don't bother with anything other than paper filter. In my case, I'm naturally inquisitive and I've found the ITG has some advantages for me: 1) It's water repellent, so my modified air (rain) intakes are unlikely to soak it solid. 2) It's not as deep as the foam filter so there is more height above the air intakes for air to "sit" and water to drop down. 3) You can't see through it. 4) I like cleaning things. Last time I cleaned it, a whole load of crap came out of the course foam at the bottom (it gets stuck there) but the very fine foam at the top was like new. No oil (or rather "glue") had passed through. I believe there is a place for good foam filters in certain cases. But only good ones. If you want better performance, buy a Ferrari ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
