2014 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 HT Fuji White
Swivel gaiters
Amongst all the other things I've been doing to my brand new 110 van prior to getting it on the road, I've been wondering if anyone has any thoughts about, or experience of, these:

Part of me thinks they could hold moisture against the swivel and make it more likely to corrode, however they would also stop all the cack from the road getting to the swivels in the first place.

I have looked at these before ,seem good idea but same as you think they might hold dirt or water in , guess they would be ok when new but after a while not so sure

all I ever have dove on all my defenders is spray the ball with waxoyl ever now and then (making sure it does not get on the brakes)

There is an article on fitting swivel gaiters in the August issue of Land Rover Owner magazine. Bit of a pig to fit insitu.

Had some genuine part leather military spec ones on an old 90 years ago....

They split slightly, without me knowing, and filled the leather "pouch" up with grit and mud, and promptly knackered the swivel hub and the seal both sides.

hence why in REME we never refitted them if they were damaged.

^^Ditto. I've had several sets on Series vehicles back in the day. Fine in theory but in practice it's hard to see if they've split or what the state of the swivels and seals are like. Steve.

I was going to suggest that if you did want to fit them, then the leather ones would be the best option, mainly because they lace up, and ergo, can be fitted without the need to remove anything. Also, if you ensure that the laces are at the bottom, then any water/muck that does get is should be able to drain off. I have them fitted on my Series One, and the are OK, however, I once had a Lightweight and the gaiters were solid and full of sand, which obviously ruined the swivels. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Thanks folks. I think, on balance, I'll leave them off and just make sure to keep an eye on the swivels.

I have vague memories of rubbing these with vasaline before fitting...or maybe I'm remembering something else Embarassed Laughing
