just pulled an old computer down out of the loft to pass on to someone.....
only prob is it has a windows log on...... user name administrator password - 'any ideas'......cos I've forgot. all I can remember is that it was a simple thing.....the sort of thing an IT guy would use but I just can't remember what it was. so short of coming up with all the obvious one's that IT gurus use is there another way round it? |

Restart the computer.
Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE two times, and then type the name of the administrator user account. In the Password box, type the administrator password, and then click OK. Reset the password. Click Start, and then click Run. Type control userpasswords2, and then click OK. On the Users tab, click the name of the user account that you want to reset the password for, and then click Reset Password. Type a new password in the New password box, and then type the password again in the Confirm new password box, and then click OK. Restart the computer, and then try to log on to Windows again. |

giarion....
I think theres a flaw in the plan unless I've misunderstood.... its the password to the administrator user name that I don't know. doing contr alt del twice didn't seem to make any difference compared to doing once? |

By default the administrator password is blank unless when you installed windows you typed in an administrator password, this is not the same as a user password when you log on to windows.
If you did enter an administor password and have forgot that then you will need to use a password unlock programme, you can download a free trial of one here http://www.passwordunlocker.com/downloads.html If all else fails you can take out the hard drive and install it into another PC this will then be assigned a different drive letter and then you will be able to navigate the drive through windows and copy and paste any files you want to the other PC's hard drive |
