Places to live within the UK
My wife and I are looking to move, just somewhere nice and quiet, we've predominantly been looking at mid to North Devon, mainly because it's nice and peaceful, good value etc. You can get more for your money than in the midlands, a nice place with a few acres would be nice.
I also like the Scottish Borders around the Kielder Forest but she's against moving north due to the temp being slightly lower!
I know its in the eye of the beholder and all that, but folk on here live far and wide - any recommendations for wide open spaces, in the countryside, good for walks with dogs, not overpriced, friendly people etc?

I lived for a while in Dorset. Near Bournemouth. Lovely county. You have beautiful villages, and you are near the sea.

Harrogate is apparently the nicest, friendliest place in the UK. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Naturally perhaps everbody thinks they live in 'God's Country' namely to be the best. I spent a considerable time being somewhat nomadic in the military, Norfolk, Oxfordshire, East Anglia, Wiltshire, Fife, Linconshire, Tayside, North and South Wales to name but a few. None of them really stood out and made me think 'This is where I want to lay some roots.'
You need to appraise your needs, wants and desires and decide yourself, perhaps go there and rent a while. All you're going to get on here will be a bunfight and grossly differing opinions, but their needs may not be the same as yours.

From your brief description it sounds like you're halfway there with Devon. If you don't need to venture too far in the Summer months that's fine because the further west you go the more the roads get choked. West Dorset/Devon I think may be worth due consideration. I live myself in Dorset it has everything I need right on my doorstep. Wiltshire may also be ok for you too. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

There can be some good places on Exmoor which are cheaper due to their location, that's providing you could live that life and cope with the travel.

Devon or Cornwall of course!
there are 3 moors to chose from - Dartmoor, Exemoor & Bodmin Moor, a wonderful diverse coast line, nice beaches and the warmest weather in the UK.
its a rural area so landrovers are part of the landscape.

South Somerset is a nice area. Where we live is 25 minutes from Exmoor, 40 minutes to Exeter (good shopping).

A303 is 5 minutes away in one direction and the M5 15 minutes in the other.

There are some nice properties, in fact one of my friends has this up for sale, nice annexe to work from and backs onto open fields.

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sa...34781.html

Plenty of good walks, with lots of varied wildlife, Otters, Kingfishers, Badgers Shocked , Deer etc.

Natives are friendly and another plus is decent cider and beer Thumbs Up

But also one of the more expensive parts of the UK to live in...Smile

Would love to move there, just can't find anything.

Cheers

Lambley, here was my story on becoming a Dorset Hobbit.....Hobbits live everywhere you just need to find your niche. I have absolutely no regrets and love my life as a Hobbit. I do however still venture out of the Shire but only rarely and as long as I have a dwarf or two to accompany me. (Usually in the shape of my 8 year old daughter and my partner who is bereft of height). There is some interesting stuff on the thread with other people sharing their experiences of where they live. Worthy of a read perhaps? Good luck in your quest. Let us know if you ever get the hairy feet.....
